Obituary for William F. Smith
William F. Smith, 72, a longtime resident of Scarborough - known fondly as Bill to family & friends - passed away on January 8, 2023.
Bill was born on May 28, 1950, in Boston to his two loving parents, John J. Smith and Edna A. Rasmussen, of Milton, MA.
He graduated from Northeastern University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Following time spent in California, Bill moved to Maine and started a lifelong career in retail. After dedicating years of management to Porteous since its opening at the Auburn Mall in 1979, he ventured on to the VF Corporation selling Lee jeans & other apparel up the coast from Kittery to Ellsworth, ME.
In Bill’s free time, he was usually golfing or dining out with loved ones. During his 15 years in Gray, he proudly volunteered with Gray Rescue. Always a kid at heart, whether Bill was skiing at Sugarloaf, white-water rafting in The Forks, or parasailing in the Bahamas, he lived for amusement & adventure.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, John and Edna, as well as his adored brother John R. Smith, of Winchester, MA.
Despite additionally being predeceased by his three marriages, Bill was a die-hard romantic right until the end.
He is survived by his stepdaughters Angela Perkins & Abby Lalone - to whom he was the most devoted and loving father figure; his beloved grandson, Elijah William (son to Angela); his sister Kathleen M. Dolan and her husband William T. Dolan Jr., of Melrose, MA; his brother Bob Smith and his wife Linda, of the UK & TX; his stunning nieces Kerri Garofano & her husband John, Kristin Regan-Nuzzo and her husband Steve, both of MA, and Erin Smith, of DC; in addition to his amazing nephews Kevin Dolan & his wife Jen of York, ME and Daniel Smith of TX; and his dear friends Paul & Judy McCarthy of Gray, ME.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Visitation Parish, Saint Mary of the Hills Church, 29 Saint Mary’s Road, Milton, Friday February 17 at 11:30 AM. Family and friends invited. Visiting hour at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, prior to the mass from 10-11 AM. Please consider a donation in Bill’s name to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or to the Center for Grieving Children.
