Obituary for William Alexander Smith
Sunrise: September 19, 1950 Sunset: June 24, 2022
Sunrise: William Alexander Smith was born in Ansonville, North Carolina, on September 19, 1950, to Mr. Pearl Smith and Mrs. Mary T. Smith. He was the baby boy of the family. William was affectionately known as K.C. (Kool Cat) by close friends and a playful nickname often used by his daughter. His mother affectionately called him CUP. William moved to Boston as a preteen, initially living with his uncle Harrison and family before the rest of his family relocated from NC. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle, and friend.
William attended the Boston Public School system and graduated from OIC, where he found his passion for computers. Through this certification program, he was able to get his first job at State Street Bank. He remained there for a few years before moving to the Commonwealth of Mass – Bureau of Computer Services. He worked for over 30 years as a Computer Analyst for the state of Mass until his retirement in 2009.
William met and married Patrice Smith, both attending Brighton High school, creating a life full of sweet and loving memories. They loved to travel together, taking several trips to destinations such as Canada, Hawaii, and Jamaica, but their favorite was visiting the grandkids. They also enjoyed frequenting the casinos in neighboring states. When he became ill, his devoted wife quickly stepped in to ensure he went to appointments and kept the doctors and family aware of his health status. As his best friend, they had a routine of watching television together and having long memorable discussions.
He loved traveling, spending time with family, talking about cars, watching basketball games, and playing cards. In his younger years, his mother loves to share stories about how he was good at ‘shooting dice .’She speaks of coming in while he was asleep and hearing him call out numbers from the dice games. He always excelled at math, so you couldn’t fool him regarding numbers or his money. William was known for his stylish dress and cool demeanor.
One of his most cherished memories was the birth of his daughter Akisha. He loved chatting with ‘his baby,’ greeting her each call with joy in his voice, “Hi Monique.” He was a proud grandpa who often shared stories about his grandkids and what they were up to. He always advocated for them and said, “buy them something they like.”
Sunset: William now joins those of his family that preceded him in his passing: father Pearl and brother Ollie. The Lord spoke, and as of June 27, 2022, his mother, Mary T., joined her son in her home-going.
He leaves to mourn his passing, wife: Patrice Smith; daughter: Akisha Monique Johnson (her husband Michael); stepdaughter: Antoinette Patton; grandchildren: Amari Montae, Arrell Monee, and Alexander Micah (affectionately named after his grandpa); brothers: Charlie Hass Carelock of NC, Sylvester Smith of MD; sisters: Gloria Jean Lashley of NC, Mary Linda Smith, and Marilyn Smith both of MA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends all of whom loved him dearly.
