Obituary for Ulysses G. Marshall
Ulysses G. Marshall was born November 12, 1925, in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Thomas Marshall and the late Anna Willie Marshall from Boston Massachusetts. Ulysses a resident of Boston, MA attended the Boston trade school and received a certification as an electrician. At the age of 18 he went on to enlisted in the Armed Service, World War II Navy Division. He would joke and say, “I don’t know what possessed me to sign up for the Navy, because I cannot swim a lick.” Ulysses known as “Barney” signed up for the duration of the War from 1943-1946.
His job in the service was to detonate the bombs that didn’t go off. He often expressed his experience in the service was during a time when Afro-Americans could only hold certain jobs assigned to enlisted soldiers. After serving his time in the Navy he stated “it is a wonder I made it home in one piece. He received the Word War II, the Korean War and the Asian metals for his years of service. After returning home from the War, he applied for a position at The City of Boston Electrical Department, where he had to take the Civil Service exam and pass before he could be hired. Ulysses passed his exam and was hired by Mayor Curley and became the first black electrician for The City of Boston Electrical Department where he worked for many years. He further advanced and became the first Black State Electrical inspector, to approve jobs throughout the State once they passed inspection.
Ulysses was married to the late Maria (Fortes)Marshall in 1946. From their union they had two children, son Grant R. Marshall, daughter Diane Marshall-Briggs and adopted daughter Leslie Ann Krupnik.
Ulysses in the early 80’s left The City of Boston Electrical Department to start his own business known as Marshall’s Electric. Ulysses owned his business for many years until he retired due to his health. He took care of his wife at home until she required further services. Ulysses then required care from his daughter as his health continued to decline. Diane expresses Ulysses attended church with her and received Christ as his Lord and Savior. Each day they recited Psalms 91 which his cousin Thelma insisted they acknowledge.
Ulysses devoted his life to working to taking care of his family. He was on the Our Lady of the Rosary bowling team, and he enjoyed traveling. After a long battle with his health Ulysses quietly departed this life in peace on December 18th, 2024, at Saint Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dorchester.
