Obituary for Susan M. Cullen

Susan M. (Monahan) Cullen, age 82, of Braintree, died peacefully, Tuesday, August 20, 2024. She passed after a short six-week battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sue was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Warren Cullen. Devoted mother of Tara Mercedes and Shannon Kate. Loving grandmother of Casey Mercedes Dana and her husband Nathaniel.

Raised in Morris Plains, NJ, Susan was the daughter of the late Everett J. and Kathryn L. (House) Monahan. She is survived by her sister Mary and brother James Monahan. Preceded in death by brothers Peter and Lawrence Monahan. She is also survived by many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, dear friends and loved ones.

She attended Morristown High School, Class of 1960, and graduated from the former All Soulsโ€™ Hospital School of Nursing in 1963, both in New Jersey.

Becoming a registered nurse was a childhood dream. Accomplished by starting her career at All Soulsโ€™ Hospital before relocating to Boston in 1965, where she worked at Children's Hospital for 15 years. In 1979, Sue became the school nurse at Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree and remained there for 30 years, retiring in 2009. During that time, she also worked in the health clinic at Curry College in Milton. Her professional research was published across multiple platforms; including International Journal of Psychiatry of Medicine and American Journal of Mental Deficiency.

While she cherished her time with family and friends, her interests also included treasure hunting, sewing, reading, walking with neighbors and the occasional trip to a casino. Over the years, Sue enjoyed being an active member of the community including the local senior center exercise groups in both Braintree and Quincy, the Gardeners' Guild of Braintree, Braintree Womenโ€™s Club and the Braintree Pop Warner Cheerleading Program. Nothing meant more to her than caring for others and making memories with her daughters and granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Monday, August 26, at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, East Milton, on Sunday, August 25, from 2 - 5 p.m. A celebratory luncheon will be held immediately following the Funeral Mass.

In addition to working with the school to have the nurse's office named in her honor, the Cullen family will be starting an annual scholarship in Sueโ€™s name. In lieu of flowers, to support these initiatives, donations can be made to: Archbishop Williams High School (in memory of Susan Cullen), 80 Independence Avenue, Braintree MA 02184.

Shannon, Tara and Casey all my love is being sent to you at the loss of your mom and Mimi. I just recently, actually the past 7 or 8 years, had the pleasure to meet and be with Sue. I feel blessed to have known her. She was such a very gentle woman and she loved to play a game of cards or have laughs over Left right center. She was a lot of fun. I thank God that John has brought all of you into my life. I am truly blessed. You are all in my prayers. You were loved very much Susan, and you will be missed. Mimi McDonough

Tara and Shannon, I remember your very well from AWHS. She was a gentle and kind woman when you needed her nursing touch but could also be loud and cheering along with the other parents on the sidelines during our games. I pray that the next few days, as sad as they may be, are filled with wonderful memories; remember her as she was and she'll be with you forever. God bless.

I have so many, many memories of Sue. Among them is her devotion to her brother, Larry. During the 1990s Larry traveled from New Jersey to Massachusetts every year to be part of the AWHS Senior Leadership Retreat. He loved being with the students and Sue loved watching him have so much fun.

The hours I spent with Mimi, between Archie's and Curry were always so calming and reassuring. Every time Casey Dana would visit, I'd get called down to the nurses office to take her to lunch with me. Memories of her warm smile and caring heart will be carried on by all who knew her. All my love ๐Ÿ’œ Carly Fleming
