Obituary for Stephen Zawatski

Stephen “Steve” Zawatski, long-time resident of Milton, passed away on November 4, 2023 with his family by his side.

Steve was born on May 27, 1949 to the late Eugene and Eleanor (Donovan) Zawatski in Boston, MA. He was predeceased by his brother Eugene of Hopkinton. Steve grew up in Braintree with his parents and siblings before moving to Milton to raise his family. He attended the University of Hartford for his undergraduate degree and Suffolk University for his graduate degree. Steve spent more than thirty-five years as an educator in the Randolph Public School system. In his retirement, he spent 16 years working for the Stop & Shop company.

Steve leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Janet of Milton, and their children - Stephen and his wife Kristin of Framingham, MA, Michelle and her partner David of Bellingham, MA, William and his husband Sheldon of Shrewsbury, MA, and Matthew and his wife Margaret of Canton, MA. He was beloved Guppy to his grandchildren, Thomas, Colin, Liam, Joseph, and Paige. He also leaves behind his sister, Maryellen of Woonsocket, RI, his sister-in-law Patricia, niece Kerri both of Holliston, MA, niece Amy, and nephew Thomas both of Mendon, MA.

Beyond his work in education, Steve found solace in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished moments spent with his loved ones, particularly during family vacations to Freedom, New Hampshire, visits with his grandchildren, and time spent with their beloved family dogs over the years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Visitation Parish (Saint Elizabeth Church), 350 Reedsdale Road, Milton, Thursday, November 9 at 10:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON Wednesday 3-7PM. Interment Milton Cemetery.

In honor of Steve's memory, contributions can be made to the Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org. May his soul be at eternal peace. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who loved him.

    Shopping at Stop and Shop is not the same as it was. I miss going down "Steve's aisle" and getting the latest on the "kids." No doubt Janet and Steve did a great job raising their own children.     Mr. Zawatski made a difference in my life. I was lucky to have him as a teacher at "the JFK" in Randolph back in the 80's. He had a way of getting through to his students, instilling discipline, and making it fun in the process. To some of us who may not have had the best homelife, Mr. Zawatski always showed us there was someone who cared. I am 55 now and have a family I adore. When I think of the people who helped get me to this point, Mr. Zawatski never escapes my memory. It could have gone so easily the other way. There is a special place in heaven for him. To the Zawatski family, please know your loss is shared by so many of us. My hope is you can take some solace in knowing the lessons he taught us will continue to make a difference in so many people's lives as we bestow the lessons we learned from him to those we love. I cannot pay my respects in person as I am out of town for work; however, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May God Bless you all.

    "A brother is a friend to the spirit and a gift to the heart." Steve loved his family well. He was devoted to all of you. He worked hard to provide a nice home. There were many happy holidays there. I'm glad to have those memories. He had a wide variety of health problems all of his life and he weathered them bravely. He was a dear, sweet brother and a caring one. I'll miss him and I'll think of him often. My words fall short of expressing my feelings.
