Obituary for Stephen Kolbe Seklecki
Stephen Kolbe Seklecki, 37, passed away peacefully at home in Quincy, Massachusetts, on January 14, 2025, after a life filled with love and adventure.
Kolbe is predeceased by his father, Roger Seklecki. Kolbe is survived by his mother, Sue Seklecki, his partner, Kirsten Currier, and his seven siblings – Christian Gantt Seklecki (Leigh), Summer Seklecki Swenson (Gabe), Martin John Seklecki, Allison Seklecki Beningfield (Scott), Mitchell Vincent Seklecki (Kristin), Roger Chandler Seklecki, and John Talbot Seklecki, and ten nephews and nieces: Sol, Oliver, Lucy, Ezra, Emma, Maris, Makenzie, Emelia, Katherine, and Davis.
Kolbe, named after Saint Maximilian Kolbe, was born in Augusta, Georgia, on May 8, 1987. He was the son of Roger and Sue Seklecki and had four older brothers, two older sisters, and one younger brother. Kolbe looked up to his older siblings and took after them. He took great pride in being John's older brother, barely two years younger. When Kolbe and John played on the same sports team, Kolbe quickly protected John when opposing teams played too rough with his younger brother.
As a child, Kolbe spent his time outdoors, playing with his siblings and neighborhood friends. Often dressed in camouflage, they would explore the creek behind his family home and frequently play games like hide-and-seek and capture the flag.
Always seeking adventure, Kolbe loved activities that gave him the thrill of flight. He always looked for ways to feel alive, whether skiing down a mountain, bouncing high on a trampoline, flipping off a diving board, or jumping his BMX bike off a homemade ramp.
Kolbe served as a Boy Scout and participated in numerous mission trips to help underprivileged communities in other parts of the country. He loved fishing in the ocean, hiking in the mountains, camping with friends, kayaking on rivers, and discovering waterfalls. He also spent many days playing disc golf with friends.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Augusta State University.
Kolbe enjoyed listening to music, attending concerts, and making music himself. Whenever friends would gather to play music—either in someone's living room or by a fire—Kolbe would join in with a pair of bongos, sharing the rhythm and filling the air with joy.
Part of his professional life was spent working as a golf caddie, where he honed his skills in Georgia, South Carolina, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Rhode Island at some of the best golf courses in the country. While he enjoyed the sport, he especially appreciated the scenic views and working outdoors, often taking pictures of his surroundings.
Kolbe was always up for the next adventure. He replaced his transmission before driving across the country, traveled to 46 of the 50 states, kayaked down a flooded creek, and never passed up an opportunity to go skydiving.
Kolbe was kind to everyone who enjoyed being a part of his life. He was fiercely proud of his family and friends and generous with his resources. Spending time with his nephews and nieces was one of his greatest pleasures.
Kolbe eventually met the love of his life in New England. He spent the past five years living with and loving Kirsten Currier. Kolbe and Kirsten enjoyed the outdoors, music, cooking, and sharing sunsets on the coast. They loved to spend time with family and friends. Most of all, they enjoyed and loved each other. Despite many medical challenges in Kolbe’s recent years, Kirsten was by his side to support him.
