Obituary for Robert L. Marr

Robert L. Marr, of Boston entered into eternal rest, Sunday August 7, 2022.

Robert was born on January 11, 1936 in Dorchester to the late Mary V. Marr (Davin) and the late Daniel F. Marr. He was predeceased in death by his brothers, John T. Marr and Daniel F. Marr Jr.

Bob attended Cranwell Jesuit Preparatory School in Lenox MA continuing his education at Notre Dame in South Bend Indiana, graduating in 1958. In the same year he married Doris Good of West Roxbury and moved to the U.S. Naval Examining Station, Great Lakes, Ill. He served in the navy assigned to the U.S. Naval Examining Center, Great Lakes, Illinois being honorably discharged as a lieutenant JG in 1960.

In 1960 Bob began a 60 year career with the Marr Companies, a sixth generation family owned business in South Boston. He guided those companies through a period of steady growth until he retired as chairman of the board in 2021.

Bob was president of the New England Patriots from 1974-1975, Captain Commander of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company from 1975-1976, Chairman of the Zoning Commission of Boston from 1992-2007, Mass Building Congress President 1965 and Past president of the Boston Chapter of the Notre Dame Club of Boston.

In 1974 with his brother Daniel Marr, Bob founded the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester, now known as the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club. The club has grown over the years to include 3 sites and serves over 6,000 children.

Bob has contributed his talents and financial support to many charitable organizations dedicated to housing, feeding and educating those in need. Many charitable events which he established are still thriving today.

Robert is survived by his wife Cynthia M. Marr of Boston, his sister Judith M. Spyrou and her husband Andreas of Bonita Springs FL, nephews Daniel F. Marr III and Claire of Milton, Jeffery T. Marr and his wife Debbie of Milton, David B. Marr Sr. and his wife Jennifer of West Dennis, and Stephen P. Marr and his wife Cynthia of Palm Beach Garden, FL.

He leaves grand nieces and nephews Jeffery T. Marr Jr., his wife Alexandra and their daughter Layla Maya of Milton, Katherine M. Marr of Milton, David B. Marr Jr. and his wife, Tessa Olson of Boston, Patrick D. Marr and his fiance Jenna Becker both of Plymouth, Molly McGowan (Marr) and her husband Michael and their son William Michael of Scituate, Lauren E. Marr of Dorchester and her sister Leigh R. Marr of Nantucket.

Bob also leaves many close friends and associates from his lifetime of work with the Marr Companies, the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club and the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street at Brook Road, Milton, Wednesday August 17 at 10:30 AM. Family and friends invited. A live stream link to the Mass is posted below. Visiting hours at the church Tuesday from 4-8 PM. Burial Saint Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
