Obituary for Peninah Peterkin
Peninah Peterkin, of Somerton, St. James, Jamaica WI and Boston, Massachusetts, went home peacefully at 96 years old, to be with her Lord on December 21,2023.
Mama/ Miss P, both of which she was affectionately called, was born on October 30,1927 to parents Henry and Catherine McCreath at Amity Hall, St. James, Jamaica.
After graduating from Carron Hall High School in St. Mary, she spent her formative years doing dress making with her sister Jean.
In 1946, Peninah met Samuel Peterkin, otherwise known as Sammy Pee, at Windsor Lodge, St. James. Uncle Sam, as he was affectionately called later became her husband. The strong union lasted 52 years until Samuel’s death in 1999, and produced 8 Children, Kingsley, Lurline, Eunice, Beverley, Joan, Dorna, Samuel Jr. & Macklin (deceased).
Mama was a very good, devoted and caring mother, while being the best wife she could be to her loving husband Samuel. She was very strict with her children and while cherishing them, held them to the highest standards. She also was very gracious and helpful to her parents Henry (Pupaa) and Catherine (Mumaa).
Peninah, although very busy caring for her family, was a strong Christian and made her spirituality a priority, centering her life on her relationship with God. She attended church services religiously on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and fasted on Fridays. She taught Sunday school and sang on her church choir in her prime years. She was musically gifted and took great delight in playing the harmonica, piano, accordion and guitar.
Peninah was predeceased by her parents, Henry & Catherine, siblings Cleophas, Andrew, Lansford, Valda, Henry Jr, Miah and Derek, husband Samuel, son Macklin and grandchildren Gerard Jr and Raymond.
She is survived by her brothers, Ancel and Lenroy, her sisters, Nerma, Sonia and Paulette, her sisters-in-law, Christine and Beverley, her remaining 7 children; son-in-law Gerard, daughters-in-law Leonie and Lisa, grandchildren Kisha, Hugh, Andre, Celia, Almoya, Kurt, Zicko, Mario, Kennado, Orane, Alyssa, Dominic, Stephan, Kaii, Demario, Josh and Austin, 17 great grandchildren, multiple nieces and nephews and a host of other loving relatives, church family and friends.
The Thanksgiving Service for the life of Peninah Peterkin will be held at The Faithful Church of Christ, 235 Woodrow Avenue, Dorchester, MA 02124, on January 6, 2024. The viewing will proceed at 9:00 AM followed by the service promptly at 10:00 AM. Interment Fairview Cemetery.
