Obituary for Oldith "Joyce" P. Headley
Joyce was born in 1931 as Oldith Prunella Moe in Cliff Cottage, St. John, Barbados to Helena Rosita Moe and Grant Willington Maynard. She had an extremely close relationship with her mom, whom she called "mum," and her dad, whom she called "daddy." For most of her early childhood, Joyce lived with her father in Bush Hall, St. Michael, Barbados. As a child, Joyce loved attending gospel meetings with her mother. She found a love for Christ at a very early age. She also loved sewing, cooking, and baking at an early age due to her mother's teachings. Joyce met her late husband Alston Headley in her late teenage years. Joyce and Alston courted from their late teens until they married in their 20s. Alston and Joyce were complete soul mates, and their marriage was centered around supporting one another. Alston and Joyce would always attend church together every Sunday, as the word of God was the anchor to the longevity of their relationship. After their last child, Alston moved to America. His goal was to get a life in America and to move his wife and children to a better home. In just a few years, Alston kept his promise to Joyce and moved her and their children to the United States of America. Finally settling in Boston, Massachusetts, this is where Alston and Joyce began their legacy. Joyce's first child and the eldest son is Frank. Joyce was very close to her first son who always helped her around the house. Frank, unfortunately, passed away in 2022, Joyce has joined him in heaven. Joyce's daughter-in-law through Frank is Melody. Joyce's second son and child is Grantley who she proudly named after her father Grant Maynard. Living in the same household, Joyce was very close to her son Grantley. Joyce's daughter-in-law from Grantley is Iona. Joyce's third and last son is George, whom she held very dear to her heart. Unfortunately, George passed away in 1995, Joyce has joined him in heaven. Joyce went on to welcome her fourth child and first daughter, whom she always said she asked god for all of the time, Deborah. Deborah was the absolute light of her eye. Joyce's late son-in-law through Deborah is Derrick. Lastly, Joyce's fifth child and second daughter is Judith. Judith, as her mothers' last child shared an unbreakable bond with her. Joyce's son-in-law through Judy is Jose. Joyce has a total of 12 grandchildren. From her eldest son Frank, she has three grandchildren. A granddaughter, Lakeenya, and grandsons Brian and Joseph. From her son Grantley, she has grandson and granddaughter, Grant and Shari. From her son George, she has two granddaughters, Barbara and Caroline. From her daughter Deborah, she has three grandchildren, grandson Derrick and granddaughters Latoya and Aliyah. Lastly, from daughter Judy she has two grandsons, Ronnie and Jarell. Through all of these grandchildren, Joyce was the great grandma to 35 children. She is also blessed to be the great-great grandmother of 16. Joyce had two siblings on her father's side, her sister, Vita, and her brother Euston. Joyce also had a half-sister named Fern. Her mother also had other children, her eldest brother Ferdinand (Fergie), her sister Patsy, her brother Earl, her brother Anthony, her sister Jeanette, and her baby sister June. Every-one of her siblings adored her, and she was always considered a sweet, loving and caring sister. Since childhood, Joyce has always been committed to Christianity and attended gospel meetings with her mother. She was born into the love of Jesus Christ and baptized at less than a month old. Throughout her childhood, she would look forward to every Sunday so she could sing her favorite hymns and be in the presence of the lord. As an adult, she continued her tradition of attending meetings every Sunday and conventions every year. Joyce has gained so many friends and close to family members while attending meetings and conventions all over the U.S and out of the U.S.
Anyone who knew Joyce knew she was very knowledgeable of the bible and could recite any scripture almost as if she had them written on the back of her hand. She also used her devotion to the lord and carried it onto her family by praying for everyone and keeping them in her thoughts throughout trials and tribulations. For most of Joyce's working years, she worked in the Department of Microbiology at The Forsyth Institute in Boston, MA. Her job consisted of checking and cleaning Dental laboratory supplies. Joyce dedicated 44 amazing years to that career and gracefully retired in 2014. Joyce was fully hands-on with her work in the dental lab and worked day in and day out with passion and enthusiasm. All of her coworkers were very fond of her and found working with her to be a pleasure. She gained many friends throughout her years of working at Forsyth.
