Obituary for Murray F. Campbell

On Thursday March 13, 2025, Murray Campbell, of Chesterville, ME, passed away peacefully. He was 78 years old.

Those who knew Murray would agree that there was not a kinder or more generous soul on earth. He was passionate about many causes and gave 110% into everything that he did.

He had a long career as a tenured professor teaching Physics and Astronomy at Colby College and undoubtedly touched thousands of lives throughout his time on Mayflower Hill. For many years while teaching there he was a member of the “Rocking Chair” men’s hockey league and could also be frequently spotted going for a run around campus on his lunch break.

When he retired from teaching there was no question about his next steps, as he moved full time to his favorite place on earth, Parker Pond. He loved nothing more than being immersed in the quintessential Maine beauty that surrounded him there everyday. He divided his time equally between all of Maine’s seasons; hiking, skiing, kayaking or sailing one of his two sailboats on the pond. He was embraced and supported by so many amazing people and communities during his time living at ‘camp’.

Murray joins in heaven, his parents, Murray and T. Virgina Campbell as well as his beloved wife Linda Campbell (Terapane) and many dogs and cats he loved so dearly. He is survived by his brother, Marion Campbell and his wife Evangeline, as well their three children, John, Paul and Bill Campbell, and their families. Murray also leaves behind two daughters, who he devoted his life to supporting and loving: Irene Campbell and Rita MacKinnon (Campbell) and her Husband, Timothy MacKinnon. Murray was also known as Grandpa Bunny, to three grandkids that absolutely adored him: Parker, Kensington and Cooper MacKinnon.

Murray loved and was loved by so many and was a gift to all that knew him. In lieu of flowers, Murray would have wanted nothing more than to support the fight against cancer that has impacted our family, and so many of our loved ones, through the American Cancer Society.

Murray was the first to welcome my family and I to Diller Line, he gave us all the details about the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the next time I ran into Murray was on Parker Pond, it was late October and he had flipped his sailboat and could not upright it. Murray was trying to swim a long way to shore, but Edie would not abandon ship and was very glad to see me! For the next 12 years, if Murray was out for his daily walk and saw someone was home, he would stop in for a beer and conversation, always with Edie in tow. If no one was home, he would dutifully check on the camp and then sit at our dock for a breather and a beer. Murray was wonderful to us and we will continue to miss him, our conversations and Edie.

I am sorry to hear of Murray's passing. one of the things missing in his obituary is his time and commitments to the mentally challenged in Central Maine. He helped to run a support group for many family members who had loved ones with M.I. His kindness and compassion helped so many get through difficult struggles and find solace and understanding for their loved ones. he will be sorely missed by many in this area. Love and strength to the family he leaves behind.

Murray was the tie that bound many of us tightly to Parker Pond. As our neighbor he and Edie were always here spreading sunshine, news and great stories...sometimes you even got to hear them a 2nd time. 🙂 Our dog loved Edie and still goes over to see if she is there to play or go for a walk. Murray was so active both on and off the lake, and such an environmentalist. He set the bar high for the rest of us and we love him for it. His spirit and work will continue on as we continue to live on & enjoy Parker Pond. We will always remember him fondly. The Whitney Family.
