Obituary for Maydell (Booker) Davis

Maydell (Booker) Davis of Hyde Park, MA, passed away December 9, 2021, age 88.

Maydell was born Sunday, January 29, 1933, in Pavo, Georgia. She was the second daughter born to Deacon John S. and Overseer Lovely Mae (Thomas) Booker-Presley (both deceased).

Maydell grew up on her family farm in Pavo, Georgia, her early years of learning was within Brooks County School System. Maydell met and married John Davis, Sr., (d), on February 3, 1951, and they soon began their family. After welcoming the first of their blossoming family, the couple relocated to Boston, MA, hoping for a better life and opportunities, and where she would eventually complete her formal educational studies.

Maydell worked professionally in two distinct career fields during her time of employment. She spent 10 years working as an auditor for the State Street Bank of Boston. Then discovered her calling was to help the sick and disabled community and she began her studies to obtain her Certified Nursing Assistant license. Upon graduating, Maydell obtained her first position at the Uphams Corner Health Center in Dorchester. Upon departure from the UPCH, she applied and obtain a position at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center where she was employed for 17 years until retirement. She also won awards for her services in healthcare and community service, including a Certificate of Appreciation in Performance, Commonwealth of Massachusetts the Urban Community Home Making & Home Health Aide Services Award, The Uphams Corner Health Center Community Appreciation Award, and awarded The Caribbean Foundation of Boston, Inc. Urban Community Homemaking Home Health Aide & Chore Services Award upon satisfying the requirements for Hospice Training.

Having been raised to have a strong relationship with the Lord, when her family relocated to Boston, Maydell settled her spiritual roots as a member of Little Zion Church of God in Christ in 1953, under the pastoral leadership of Elder James Darby.

Sister Davis worked on various committees during her tenure under Pastor Darby and was later elevated to the position of Junior Church Mother, supporting the Senior Church Mother and the lady auxiliary members. Mother Davis also supported the church’s fundraising events, such as cooking delicious foods to support the restoration of their new church building. Her participation was not limited, and she would say, “Whatever my hands find to do, let me do it in the service of the Lord.”

Mother Davis was known for her sense of style, accessorizing her outfits with necklaces, brooches, and hats. Maydell’s hobbies included clothes shopping as well as crocheting one of her signature blankets for family and close friends. She also enjoyed spending time with her loved ones and sharing with them the Word of God.

After, the Lord called Elder Darby home Mother Davis decided to step down from her role as the Junior Church Mother. However, she continued to support of the ministry under the leadership of Elder Darby’s daughter, Pastor Sybil F. Dunwoody. In 2008, after 55 years of supporting membership, she was awarded The Reverend James Darby Memorial Award for longevity in service.

A promise made; a promise kept. In addition to being a loving mother to her own five children, she was also “mother” to her nieces Deanie Robinson, Johnniemae Calhoun (d), and Mary Louture-Lewis (d) following the untimely loss of their own mother, the late Josephine McQueen, promising shelter, and love to her girls.

Sunset: Maydell now joins those of her family that preceded her in her passing: children: Christine (Pinky), John Jr., and Sidney (Bubba); parents (listed above), brothers John L., Roscoe, Willie Mack, and Willie Paul; sisters Essie Mae (Samuels), Eloise (Richardson), and Presiding Elder Mary B. (Lee).

She leaves to mourn her passing daughters: Mildred L. Simmons and Geraldine (Geri) Davis-Moye; sons: Arthur J. and Michael L.; grandchildren: Samia, Sidney, Kathryne, Monique, Takeya, Larry, Jamal, Secorey, Sequan, Michel, Lorenza, Shaunie, Jordan, Ebony, Eriana, Janaya, Danetra, Arthur Jr., Donnell, Alexis, Javon, Sonya, Crystal and Tyra and great-grands: Selena, Nastar, Jaylan, LaShawna, Jamia Lovely, Isaiah, Azairah, Myra, Darius, Amiah, Shyriana, JC (d), and Layla, Zyair, Noria, Dante, Tranaise, Charles, Jetta, Troy, Raven, Dwan, Amirah, Jesse, and Jayce all of Boston.

Sisters: Emma G. (Robert (d) Swain of MA, and Mildred (Fred) Williams and sister-in-law Nadine (Willie Paul (d) Booker, both of GA.

Along with a host of her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Sharing in the grief of her passing is her longtime friend and companion Mr. John Robinson and his family.

Visitation will be held at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS on Thursday December 23rd from 10-11AM. Funeral Service to begin at 11AM. Interment at Fairview Cemetery.
