Maureen M. Hern, known as “Moe” to her family, died by accident at home, Sunday August 8, 2021, at the age of 66.

Condolences

  • February 17, 2023

I didn't learn of Moe's passing until recently, so this condolence message is much too late. I knew Maureen my last two years living in Amherst, MA where I was a year ahead of her at UMass. We were introduced by a mutual friend during my senior year and Moe's junior year and we became good friends. Our shared Irish-American heritage made it easy for us to share time together and I will always remember her as a kind, warm, and generous person with a GREAT sense of humor. I continued to live in Amherst after graduation, working at a farm and Maureen was the most insistent voice advising me to do more with my Political Science degree than working on a farm! She must have said the right things since I soon embarked on a 33 year career with the federal govt that took me all over the US until my retirement. We corresponded for a few years after I moved from Massachusetts but eventually lost contact, which I do regret, especially now. I was somewhat surprised that she had not married and raised a family of her own, since the Maureen I knew would have been a wonderful wife and mother. I'm sure her nieces and nephews received all the love, warmth and guidance that she would have given to her own children during her lifetime. My own memories of Moe are a testament to the fact that she had a very positive impact on others well beyond her immediate family and that impact still resonates to this day. I hope that knowledge can serve in some small way to assuage the grief her family must feel even now nearly two years after her passing. Devin Croft Littleton, CO
