Obituary for Martin "Marty" J. McCarthy, Jr.
Martin J. “Marty” McCarthy, Jr., 70, of Quincy, MA (formerly of South Boston), passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters after a long, courageous fight against Huntington’s Disease (HD) on February 6, 2024. Despite his illness, he was determined to live a full, fun, and rewarding life, and he certainly accomplished his goal.
Born in South Boston, MA to Martin J. & Susan T. (Milne) McCarthy, Marty made them very proud with all his accomplishments, whether as an altar boy at Gate of Heaven Church, a star athlete in baseball and basketball, a supportive volunteer coach to many young men who became lifelong friends, a US Army Reservist for 26 years—retiring as an Inspector General E8 (TOP), a NE Telephone Company employee for 30 years, and a graduate of Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy.
After early retirement from Verizon, he accepted his dream job of working for the Boston Red Sox in 2004 as a Greeter. He loved working there for 11 years and witnessed 3 World Series wins. Some would say he was the good luck charm for the team...
Marty and his wife volunteered for several rewarding years after retirement at My Brother’s Keeper in Brockton, MA.
Once diagnosed with HD, he became a major fundraiser for the NE Chapter of HDSA by conducting several “Party at the Park” events at Fenway with the help of his loving wife, family, and many friends. These events were also dubbed “Marty’s Party”.
Survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Kathy Hackett, loving daughters Kathleen Shepherd and her husband Matt of Hampstead, NH and Christine Remlinger and her husband Kurt of Pembroke, MA, and 4 cherished grandchildren: Veronica and Paul Remlinger, Charlie and Grace Shepherd. Loyal brother of Susan Bodnar and her husband Igi of South Boston, Terry Joyce and her husband Jack of New London, NH, Barbara George of Tewksbury, MA, and Michele Twombly and her late husband Peter of N. Attleboro, MA.
Also survived by his Aunt Catherine Judge of Nashua, NH, many special nieces, nephews, cousins, countless friends, and his former wife Kathleen Berry of Quincy, MA. Preceded in death by his sister, Mary McCarthy, his niece Marianne Twombly, and his in-laws, Bob and Charlotte Hackett. The family appreciates the support of hospice caregivers for the last 4 years, especially CNA friend Max DesRosiers.
