Obituary for Marie Immacula Seme

Marie Immacula Seme passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

Marie was born June 14, 1940 to Semeus Seme and Amelie Paule in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti.

As a young girl, Immacula helped her parents in all aspects of farming, housekeeping and anything else that would help sustain her family. As Immacula matured into a young adult, she moved to the capital, Port-au-Prince, and established a reputation for her cooking skills. Eventually she established a full catering business, serving business and private functions to support her family. For a part of her life Immacula lived in the Dominican Republic continuing to flourish through her catering business all in the spirit to sustain and support her family. In addition to catering, she laundered clothes, and engaged in commerce as a means to support her growing family.

In 2001, Immacula emigrated to the US to join her son, Eddy. They quickly became re-acquainted after over 20 years apart. The years together allowed both of them to make up for lost time and their bond was formed in her cooking, conversation and her lively, unfiltered jokes. During those years, Immacula often expressed that her biggest disappointment in life was that she had never attended school to learn how to read and write. This would bring her to tears but she would also express her pride that all her children had attained an education and knew the value of an education.

During her years in the U.S. Immacula accrued a large group of friends, based on her friendly demeanor and her ability to tell off-landish jokes that would leave people both shocked and in stitches laughing. She knew almost everyone in the neighborhood, despite her inability to speak English. When asked how she knew all the people in the neighborhood despite not speaking the language, she once famously told me that “we spoke old people language.” Immacula loved all her grandchildren and loved to have them around her and the first question asked of them was usually, “have you eaten?” She loved to cook and feed her loved ones. You knew she loved and cared for you if she offered to cook for you.

To sum up Immacula’s life, it could be said that she was a modern day hero, who despite her circumstances, found a way when there was none. She persevered in the face of adversity and always figured it out when most would have folded under the strain and pressures of surviving and raising children in a 3rd world country.

Immacula leaves to cherish her legacy and memory her four children, Marie Beatrice Grandois, Eddy Chrispin, Tamara Lemaine, and Jimmy St. Victor, her grandchildren, Hervens Jean-Baptiste, Jordan Chrispin, Chris Godwin Jean-Baptiste,Joel Jean-Michel, Lamour Jr., Malcolm Chrispin, Jennifer Lamour, Melinda Jean-Baptiste, Chaeyenne Jean-Baptiste, and Tamaifcka St. Victor. She leaves behind siblings, Noel Seme, Jacque Seme, and Andre Seme. She also leaves to grieve her a large number of other family and friends.
