Lillian Oweeda Dendy-Wynn, affectionately known as Aunt Lill, was born in Clinton, South Carolina, on March 29th, 1929, to her loving parents, Reverend Spurgeon C. Dendy and Lillian James Dendy. Surrounded by her loving family, Lillian went home to be with the Lord on September 1st, 2022. She was the fifth of seven children.
Lillian received her early education at the Bell Street School, now known as the Martha Dendy School, in honor of her paternal grandmother. Lillian later went on to study cosmetology and take courses at Harvard University.
Lillian later moved to Washington, DC, where she married her late husband Martin F. Chase Jr., and together they welcomed three wonderful children: Martin F. Chase III, Laverne, and Charles. After much thought, the family relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. Lillian went on to work as a hairdresser for over twenty years! Those fortunate to have had her grace their scalp can genuinely attest to her skills. They would also come to know her as kind, funny, honest, and frank when they needed some advice. She later went on to work for the State of Massachusetts as an Intake Supervisor for the Department of Welfare and additionally as a Supervisor at Suburban Homemakers in Brookline.
After many years, Lillian married the late Corrie Wynn in Boston. When her father and brother became ill, she and Corrie gave up their jobs and moved to Clinton, South Carolina and care for her family. While in Clinton, Lillian attended Friendship AME Church, where she served faithfully on several boards. In her spare time, Lillian loved having gatherings where she would cook extravagant and delicious meals for her family and friends. Her famous fried chicken, sweet potato pies, and sweet tea would surely bring a crowd to the house! While managing the family properties, Lillian opened a store called The Wynn Shoppe. It was a very popular women’s and children’s clothing store. Lillian completed her chapter in South Carolina and moved back to Boston with her daughter. Lillian lived a full and loving life and will be dearly missed.
