Obituary for Kostas E. Zalios
Kostas E. Zalios passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024 at his home in Milton, surrounded by his family.
Loving husband of 54 years of Sandy (nee Aevazelis). Beloved father of Katherine Maguire and her husband Thomas of Hanover, MA, Sophia Zalios and her partner Michael Smith of Danbury, CT, and Evan Zalios of Milton, MA. Cherished Papouli of his namesake Charles โKostakiโ Wood and Karina Wood. He leaves a sister, Eugenia Bachakouli of Naoussa, Greece. He is pre-deceased by his brothers John Zalios and George Zalios, both of Greece. Kostas will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Son of the late Evangelos and Katina (Diamanti), Kostas โ known as โCharlieโ to many โ grew up in the northern part of Greece, the historic region of Macedonia, the oldest of four children. As a young man, he traveled through Europe, driving long hauler trucks to as far as France and Germany, where he honed his mechanic skills. He was a proud veteran of the Greek Army, serving as a gunsmith. It was there that he developed his lifelong enthusiasm of firearms โ whereas other men golfed, Kostas loved to hang out at the gun club and โshoot a few roundsโ, taking at times his daughter Kathy, his son and his wife. He was happiest after some target practice at the Braintree Rifle & Pistol Club, where he was a member for many years.
Kostas came to the US after marrying his beloved wife in Greece, at the age of thirty and with little knowledge of the English language. With no formal studies, he quickly picked up the language and if you asked about his education, he would tell you that he was educated by The History Channel, with a broad smile. Within a short time of emigrating, he built his business, a gas station and automotive garage that he owned for four decades which will forever be known by family and friends as Sea Street Getty in Quincy, MA. There, he never met a stranger and made legions of friends, some of which he would lunch with often at Grumpy Whiteโs restaurant down the street from the gas station.
In his later years, Kostas enjoyed traveling with his wife and family to his condo in South Fort Myers, FL. When at his home of over 50 years in Milton, he would routinely find projects to work on, happily tending to his garden and peach tree. He was loved by one and all and will be deeply missed.
