Beloved husband of Dionne Espeut-Stewart of Roslindale. Father of Christopher Lewis. Loving stepfather of Jovan, Janel, and Jalani Mitchell. Brother of William Stewart and Stephen Stewart. Joseph was born February 10, 1959 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Son of the late Paul Edward Stewart and Jessie Byrd. He was also preceded in death by his younger brother Paul Stewart Jr. and older sister Rosetta Lee Holland.

Joseph attended Washington Irving H.S. in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He proudly served his country in the United States Army October 27,1977 – June 29,1983, and then served in the Army Reserve. He completed many missions and assignments in the United States and overseas including S. Korea, Germany, and Iraq to name a few.

After the military, Joe spend several years traveling, finally settling in Lowell, MA where he worked in CWT program in the Veterans Administration with goal of pursuing his passion to become entrepreneurial businessman. He established “Joe’s Fashion Shoes and More”. He was committed to providing quality products and services to Veterans, staff, and customers alike.

Our beloved Joe was known to family as Joe, Joe-Joe, or “Bear”; the Shoe guy” to those on the business front; and “The Mayor of Birch St” to neighbors. He was a proud man who embraced his Native American heritage. He enjoyed traveling, long road trips, the constant need to stay on the move, fishing, let’s not forget his love for bowling. He was the master of gadgets! Joe was a detail orientated handy man to say the least, he enjoyed fixing everything, and being creative. Texas Roadhouse was his favorite restaurant. He was an avid Steelers fan from head to toe. Joe was a spiritual man who love the Lord. He enjoyed listen to his gospel & jazz selections, and old school R&B.

Joe had a soft side that swept Dionne off her feet uniting them a faithful 9 years ago. They made their union official, marrying on December 11, 2021. He was a devoted, loving, caring, hard working, protective husband and father. He enjoyed spending his time with family and helping his fellow Veterans.

Joe was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer October 2021. His chemotherapy treatment regimen began in November of 2021 and was progressing well, when suddenly cancer started to spread to other organs. His battle against cancer took an unexpected turn for the worse couple weeks ago; it became aggressive and resistive to conventional treatment therapy. Joe fought a hard fight to the end. Joe succumbed to his cancer on August 10, 2022 at home with his wife and family. He was a generous man with a huge heart. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to have known him. We celebrate his intelligence, humor, strong will, wit, strength, drive, resourcefulness and tenacity.
