Obituary for Johnnie Jonathan James, Jr.

Johnnie Jonathan James, a devoted husband, loving father, and valiant Vietnam War Veteran, passed away on May 31, 2023, after suffering a stroke and enduring many health challenges. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering love. Johnnie's remarkable journey as a soldier and a father stands as a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to his family and his country.

Born on January 6, 1948, to parents Helen (Young) James and Johnnie James. Sr.; his early childhood was spent in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was elder to his sister, Patricia Viola James. In his early years, Johnnie and his sister Patricia moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and then back to Pittsburgh, where he attended Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh. Qualities of hard work and integrity were instilled at a young age and would shape his character and guide him throughout his life. After high school, Johnnie felt a deep sense of duty towards his nation and chose to enlist in the United States Army.

In 1969, amidst the turmoil of the Vietnam War, Johnnie found himself serving in the thick of battle, far away from home. It was during this time that he faced one of the most profound challenges of his life. While fighting on the front lines, his wife, Patricia, was giving birth to their firstborn son Terrence. Despite the physical and emotional distance, Johnnie carried the weight of his responsibilities as a soldier and a father with unwavering strength.

Johnnie's love for his family fueled his determination to protect his comrades and defend his country. He displayed immense bravery and selflessness, earning the respect and admiration of those who fought alongside him.

After serving his country with honor, Johnnie returned home to his family, embracing his role as a father with the same vigor and passion he had displayed on the battlefield. He cherished his children and was a source of support, and love. Johnnie's professional endeavors include working for Hub Mail, the familiar delivery truck shaped like a mailbox. Johnnie went on to work for Polaroid, Deer Island House of Corrections, and finally retiring from Westinghouse Elevators after being declared a disabled veteran.

Johnnie had a passion for singing and took his singing group to audition for Boston’s popular Community Audition television show. You could always find Johnnie humming a tune or listening to music with his wife Pat and their friends Clayton, Diane, and Leonard. He spent his post-war years actively contributing to various veteran organizations, advocating for the rights and welfare of his fellow servicemen.

Johnnie James leaves behind a legacy of bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to those he held dear. He is fondly remembered by his former wife, Patricia James, and his children, Zina, Lamont, Terrance, and Derrick. He was pre-deceased by his son John Lamont James. He also leaves behind ten beautiful grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. Johnnie’s community of family and friends will forever cherish his memory. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing his contributions to his family, his country, and his fellow veterans will never be forgotten.
