Obituary for John D. Reardon

REARDON – John D. of Milton, formerly of Brookline, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the age of 77, with his wife at his side.

Beloved husband of Marilou Reardon. Devoted father of Nancy Stewart and her husband Adam of West Newbury; Sarah Reardon of Newburyport; and Colleen Reardon of Milton. Loving grandfather to his cherished grandsons, Ronan, Jude and Bodhi.

John was born in Brookline on Aug. 22, 1946, to the late John C. and Elizabeth (Meehan) Reardon. He attended Brookline High School and graduated from Boston College in 1968.

John was a respected leader in Boston’s healthcare finance industry. He proudly served as Chief Financial Officer of the Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury for nearly two decades. John was dedicated to the health center’s mission, which is strongly rooted in addressing social injustice, tackling the causes of health disparities, and providing robust community outreach programs to the neighborhoods it serves.

John’s decades of service were recognized in 2018 when he received the Frances M. Hernan Award from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), where he served as a long-time board member and fellow. This honor, a lifetime achievement award, recognized John’s outstanding contributions to hospital financial management over a career spanning nearly five decades.

John previously served as Controller of Carney Hospital in Dorchester, where he met his loving wife Mary of 43 years at an employee Christmas party. Together they raised three daughters in Milton, where John was a devoted member of the St. Agatha Parish and frequently served as a lector during Mass.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, September 11th at St. Agatha Parish, 432 Adams Street, MILTON at 10:30 a.m. Interment in Milton Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, September 10th at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., (EAST MILTON SQUARE) from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.

I am very sorry to learn of John's passing. I hadn't seen him in many years and was looking for his tel number when the notice appeared. We Arcand boys; Ed, Jim and Bob lived 3 houses away on Chestnut Hill ave. Bob was in John's class. All three of us loved playing and associating with john. He had a fine hard working father and a truly sainted Irish mother in Betty. We had John and Betty visit our summer home in Beverly on several occassions. Unfortunately dad decided to sell Brookline and move to Beverly Frams aroung 1960. We miss the gang and wonderful people and the Reardons would be top listers of the fine families. It was an idealic neighborhood, people, schools and playgrounds. I have lost my parents and my brothers Ed and Bob, life's most difficult blow. My deepest sympathies to his beloved wife and children. John had a great heart for others and unlimited decency. Jim Arcand...Beverly , Mass. jimoncoast@aol.com

My condolences to Marilou John's loving wife and devoted mother to Nancy, Sarah, and Colleen. John was a devoted Husband and Father first, but being a Grandfather to Ronan, Jude, and Bodhi gave him like all of us grandfathers, that opportunity to really make a difference. In a child's eyes there is nothing like a Grandparent. I had the opportunity to meet John back in the 1980's when I did some insurance work with his family. I also was a fellow Lector at St. Agatha's and served many Masses sharing the readings as co-Lectors. John loved the Lord Jesus and proclaimed the word of God so clearly with his distinctive baritone voice. I actually was a little envious of the voice God gave John. May John be granted eternal life with God in Heaven and the opportunity to use that voice to sing God's praises for Eternity. May God bless all John's Family and grant them comfort and peace.

John and I sat beside each other for many years at HFMA board meetings and I kidded him that we had served so long that we had become the two old curmudgeons, Waldorf and Statler, of the Muppets TV show. John was a truly caring individual who worked tirelessly on behalf of HFMA and continued to volunteer at the annual New to Healthcare meeting even in his retirement years. I had the great privilege of presenting the Frances M. Hernan Award to John in 2018 for his many years of service to HFMA. I know that John was proud to receive the award with his family in attendance. RIP, good friend' Gerry O'Neill

I'm sorry to hear of John's passing: he was a true gentleman. For a bunch of years John, Gerry O'Neill and a bunch of us other old timers would be the faculty of the HFMA's "Accountants New to the Field" educational program. It was a measure of John's character that he placed so much importance on bringing up the next generation of healthcare finance folks.

John was like a wise older brother to me, influential in many ways, and a true servant leader. I was blessed to know him professionally through HFMA and as a dedicated parishioner at St. Agatha Church in Milton. On Saturday, 9/9/23, we will dedicate the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary to John and his beautiful family.

I worked closely with John Reardon for more than 20 years in his role as our Chief Financial Officer at Whittier Street Health Center. John was a "rare" friend, colleague and professional partner, who consistently went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure we accomplished our vision, mission and goals. We partnered on many projects to ensure our continued viability and impact, including the funding and building of our 79,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art flagship building in Roxbury. John was deeply committed to our mission to address health and economic equity, equality and social justice. He worked hard to support the more than 30,000 people we serve from more than 25 different countries. He was a highly skilled CFO and a passionate advocate for our minority, vulnerable and low-income communities. He was a mentor and coach to many in the accounting field and in healthcare. He was guided by his faith and the love for his family. He made an indelible impact in our organization and I am personally grateful for all he did to support my leadership and the organization's mission. John was dependable, hard working, kind, and loyal. He will be missed! Words cannot express our love for John and our gratitude for his compassionate service. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family. May John's soul rest in perfect peace!
