Obituary for Jocelyn Alita James
Jocelyn Alita James, daughter of Austin Mason and Doris Jackman Mason, was born on January 19th 1936 in Trinidad. She was the 4th of 5 children and grew-up in St. James and Woodbrook, Port-of-Spain. She attended the Tranquility Government Primary and High Schools. Jocelyn graduated from Teachers’ Training College and later attended the University of the West Indies, at St Augustine, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. At age 18 she began working as a Teacher at the Tranquility High School. She remained in this position until her retirement in 1987. Jocelyn migrated to the United States in 1988, and lived in Brooklyn, New York before relocating to Boston, Massachusetts.
Jocelyn was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, teacher, sister-in-law, and sister-in-Christ who was affectionately called, “Aunty J.” She had a passion for Christian mentoring of youth and was a dedicated leader in The Girls’ Brigade International organization. She enjoyed writing and implementing curriculum, coaching leaders on effective teaching skills, and planning Girls’ Brigade trips throughout the world. Jocelyn enjoyed giving gifts to others and lending a helping-hand whenever and for whoever she could.
Jocelyn was a member of the San Juan Pilgrim Holiness Church, the Beulah Pilgrim Holiness Church, and the Beulah Family Church. She was involved in several formal and informal ministries, including: Girls’ Brigade USA, Vacation Bible School, Women’s Ministry, Sunday school, and several others. One of her favorite hymns was, “It Will Be Worth It All.” Thanksgiving dinner would not be the same without her booklet of selected hymns and scripture for the gathering to utilize between the main meal and dessert.
Jocelyn was called home on Monday, October 10, 2022 in her home and under the attentive care of her darling husband, Julius James. She was preceded in death by her father (Austin), her mother (Doris), her siblings (Kenneth, Marjorie, Rita, Harold, and Randolph), and her niece (Sharon). Jocelyn’s life will forever be cherished and celebrated by her numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, her Girls’ Brigade family, and friends. We are comforted by the knowledge that Jocelyn is with the God whom she loved and zealously served. We rest in the assurance of our glorious reunion with her in Heaven.
