Obituary for Jane Roach

Jane Roach died peacefully at her home in Milton, Massachusetts on December 23, 2024. She was 90.

She had moved to Milton just a year earlier from San Francisco, her home for more than sixty years.

Born in Michigan, Jane attended the University of Michigan, where she focused her career ambitions on nursing. While a student, Jane was chosen in 1956 to represent the State of Michigan at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC.

Following her graduation from Ann Arbor in 1957, she embarked on an extensive tour of Europe with college friends, an experience she thoroughly enjoyed for its cultural diversity.

In 1961, she moved to New York to pursue graduate studies at Columbia University. While in New York, she indulged what would become a life-long love of theater. She especially treasured the occasions when her Mother would join her in the City to attend museums, Broadway plays and favorite restaurants.

Following her graduation from Columbia with a Masters degree in 1962, she moved briefly to Dallas, where she taught nursing for a year. She was working at Parkland Memorial Hospital on the that terrible day in November, 1963 when the grievously wounded President of the United States was admitted for attention.

In 1964, she moved to San Francisco, where she did additional post-graduate education at the University of California, and in 1965, became a Registered Nurse.

She loved the nursing profession and soon passed on her experience to succeeding generations by teaching at the University of California in San Francisco.

After teaching, she served as a Public Nurse and did social work throughout the city. During the 1980’s AIDS Crisis, Jane was recognized by the city with an award for her service to the Gay community of San Francisco.

Jane is survived by a sister, Sarah Wales, of Chicago, a brother, Timothy, of Milton, Massachusetts, many cousins with whom she spent idyllic summers in Northern Michigan, nieces and nephews whom she cherished for their humor and doting attention, and the many dozens of friends who made her life so very worth living.
