Obituary for James "Jimmy" F. Sweeney, O.F.S.

SWEENEY - James F. “Jimmy”, age 72 of Quincy, formerly of Milton, entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 2, 2024, with his family by his side.

Beloved son of the late Daniel P. and Gertrude (Drain) Sweeney. Cherished brother of Daniel P. Sweeney III, D.D.S. of Harwich, Robert C. Sweeney and his wife Gertrude of Milton, Richard E. Sweeney and his wife Patricia of Milton and MaryEllen Dumais and her husband Richard of Milton.

Devoted uncle of Catherine Regan (and her husband Michael), Daniel Sweeney (and his wife Emily), Bradley Dumais, Danielle Dumais, and Christina Sweeney; and grandnieces: Madelyn and Julia Regan; and grandnephews: Daniel and Conor Sweeney.

Jim led an interesting and challenging life. He attended Saint Agatha’s grammar school and graduated Catholic Memorial High School, where he was both an academic Merit Scholar and an All-Star Hockey Player. He then received a hockey scholarship to attend the Mount Hermon School. Thereafter, Jim graduated Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts where he received a B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Counseling.

Although confronted with bouts of depression during his adult life, Jim achieved success in his career in social services in the District Attorney’s Office in the Quincy Court System and as a substitute teacher in the Quincy Public Schools.

Jim was a proud member of the Third Order of the Franciscan Missionaries for more than 40 years. It was in this role that he found true peace. Jim lived according to the Franciscan values of humility, selflessness, and simplicity which he demonstrated through his faith, friendships, and charitable work. Jim, a devout Catholic, furthered his religious endeavors as both a Eucharistic Minister and a Lector.

Jim’s father, Daniel P. Sweeney, Jr. founded Milton Youth Hockey (MYH) in 1965 and coached Jim as a member of MYH’s first ever hockey team. Over the years, Jim continued to share his love for hockey by volunteering to teach youngsters the basic skills of skating as an instructor in the MYH ‘Learn to Skate’ Program.

Another passion of Jim’s was building model rockets. In his early adult years, Jim could be found sharing his expertise and time with Boston Public School students by teaching and demonstrating model rocketry on the outdoor playground.

Jim always lent a helping hand to others and strived to better the world around him by the grace of God.
