Obituary for Isabelle "Patsy" Cook Pratt

Pratt, Isabelle “Patsy” Cook, of Milton and formerly of Hingham and Dover, passed away on June 29, 2022.

She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1937 to Henry and Louise (Marckwald) Cook. During her early years, she moved with her family to Newton and subsequently to Hingham, MA. She attended Derby Academy and went on to Milton Academy, graduating in 1955. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College in 1959. Patsy began her post college years working at the Little, Brown Publishing Co. before becoming an elementary school teacher at the Belmont Day School and then the Park School. She was a devoted teacher, always striving to help her students to “climb high/climb far, your aim the sky/your goal the star.” She paused her career to focus on being a caring mom for over 15 years and then went into real estate for several years before retiring.

Patsy was an avid reader, loved symphonic music as well as Dixieland and was always reluctant to leave a dance floor, a tennis court or a ski mountain. When you first met her, you soon realized that she was easy to talk to, quick to laugh, had a wonderful smile and sense of humor. She was much more interested in learning about you than she was in talking about herself, which she rarely did. If you knew her well, you knew how thoughtful and kind she was, never seeking the spotlight but was always there for you when she was needed.

The courage, strength and determination that she summoned during twelve years of coping with dementia were an inspiration to all of us. She never complained and was stoic until the end. She is survived by her husband, Hal whom she met a holiday dance in 1963. After a “whirlwind” courtship that spanned nearly four years, they were married at the Old North Church in Marblehead. She and Hal were inseparable, doing everything together for 55 years. They had two children-Becca Bromark, who lives in Acton, MA with her children, Nico and Allie, and Ben Pratt, who lives in Holliston, MA with his wife Sarah (Williamson) and their children, Abby and Henry. Patsy is also survived by two siblings-Henry Cook of Manchester-by-the-Sea and Molly Morris of East Aurora, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trustees of the Reservations, 200 High St., 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02110. One of Patsy’s favorite places was World’s End in Hingham, a Trustee’s property. A bench in her memory will be placed on the property as soon as possible.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
