Obituary for Hieu Khac Vu, MD
Dr. Hieu Khac Vu, a devoted family physician and beloved member of the Dorchester and Milton communities, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on June 1, 1944, in Quỳnh Côi, Vietnam, Hieu dedicated his life to serving others, providing compassionate care to generations of patients and giving
selflessly to the Vietnamese community in Dorchester.
In 1968, Hieu began his service in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He graduated from medical school at the University of Saigon in 1971 while in the Army and served as a medical officer. After the fall of Saigon, he immigrated to the United States in 1975. He married Ha Nguyen in 1986 and together, raised their three daughters as he established his career in the U.S. Here, he completed his residency at University of Massachusetts Medical School, then proceeded to open a private family practice on Dorchester Avenue with the help of his wife. He was beloved by his patients for his sense of humor, dignity, and strong sense of duty toward those who were uninsured and underserved.
He was a devout Catholic and was a longtime member of St. Ambrose Parish in Dorchester. He volunteered at his parish where he enjoyed seeing his patients and their families outside the office. He instilled the importance of religion in his family by praying with his wife and children nightly and teaching his children lessons from the Bible.
Hieu was a dedicated father to his daughters. He instilled the importance of education, helping his children complete their homework in the evenings. And after the children went to bed, he completed his charting on the couch. He was an accomplished soccer player. He savored moments in his backyard playing badminton and swimming with his children. Though he loved splashing around, he equally loved being his children’s personal swim coaches, starting off each swim with laps around the pool. He cherished dinners together, followed by Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. His favorite Sunday traditions were mass with the family, and watching football all day long.
Although he was a stroke survivor, he found strength in his religion and his family. His wife supported him in every step of his recovery. He showed immense resiliency despite his physical limitations: volunteering to visit the sick, attending church, and visiting friends.
Hieu is survived by his wife Ha; daughters Theresa, Cecilia, and Catherine, and their husbands; and three grandchildren along with countless family and friends. He is preceded by his parents and numerous beloved siblings.
Hieu will be remembered for his enduring faith, dedication to service, and the many lives he touched with care and compassion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 13th at 10:30AM at Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, MILTON. Interment at Milton Cemetery.
