Obituary for Haidee W. Flinders

Haidee Whiteside Flinders of Brookline, Massachusetts was born on April 9th, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts and was 81 years old. She died peacefully on November 10th, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Haidee was raised in Milton, Massachusetts. She is predeceased by her father Howard Stockton Whiteside, her mother Elisabeth Swift Whiteside, her brother Alexander Whiteside and her sister Lisa Whiteside. She leaves behind her two sons, Matthew and Andrew Flinders, who love her dearly. She is also survived by her former husband Peter Flinders, with whom she was married for 25 years.

As a youth Haidee attended Milton Academy and then St. Mary’s-in-the-Mountains in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. She then studied French at Mount Holyoke College, where she graduated cum laude. She went on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Michigan in French literature, specializing in the works of Michel de Montaigne. She was a Ph.D. candidate in French at UC Berkeley, but she withdrew to raise her family. Eventually, she would go back to school and earn a second master’s degree in library science at Syracuse University, where she studied the humanitarianism of Albert Schweitzer.

While raising her family in Honeoye Falls, New York, she worked as a librarian in nearby Castile. She was active in the Episcopal Church and the Honeoye Falls Historical Society. She volunteered many hours at Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital library and the Bryn Mawr Bookstore.

Haidee loved upstate New York, and in addition to Honeoye Falls, she also raised her family for a time in Buffalo and Oswego, New York.

Haidee was a great lover of animals, and always had at least one kitty cat, whom she loved as much as her children. In her last years, she was greatly loved by all in her assisted living community at Goddard House in Brookline. She was so sweet and loving that everyone there wanted to care for her. Heaven has gained an angel named Haidee.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 2nd at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 112 Randolph Ave., MILTON at 11:00 am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Haidee may be made to ASPCA - Animal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ~ www.aspca.org
