Obituary for Gloria Ervin
Gloria J. Ervin was born to the late Ellen Ervin on July 5, 1948 in Heflin, Alabama and departed this life on April 14, 2023. She relocated to Boston at a young age with her mother and older sister Barbara Baron (Ervin). Gloriaโs greatest joy in life was raising her beloved twins, Dayna and Daylana. She was a loving Mom and a great friend to many. To know her was to love her. She had a way of making everyone feel seen, heard, and special. Gloriaโs loving way and giving spirit extended to everyone she knew. Traveling with family was one of Gloriaโs true passions. She was always ready to roll!! Gloria enjoyed taking trips to Atlanta to visit family multiple times a year. Gloria especially loved visiting new places, such as Mount Rushmore, Ellis Island, New York City, Denver, Niagara Falls, and Washington DCโs Smithsonian Museums with her children. She enjoyed being a tourist and experiencing these places through the lenses of her grandchildren. Gloria was also fond of tropical places like St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and Jamaica. Las Vegas was also one of her favorite places. She wasnโt a gambler, but she was a big fan of the live shows and buffets. Gloria was a lifelong learner, who was eager and motivated to always learn something new. She kept her mind sharp by doing crossword puzzles daily. Gloria loved learning! In her mid-thirties, Gloriaโs natural curiosity prompted her to learn sign language. She went to her full-time job in the day and took classes in the evenings. Gloria felt that it was a good skill to have โjust in caseโ. She also became a notary in her forties. After years of raising her children and ensuring they obtained their college degrees, Gloria decided it was her turn. At fifty years old, she graduated with a Bachelorโs degree from Springfield College. Gloriaโs professional career spanned across multiple industries and disciplines. She worked as a Medical Transcriber at Beth Israel Hospital (now known as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). After many years of working in this role, Gloria became the Executive Assistant to the President at the Greater Boston YMCA. She later pivoted to a new career as a Social Worker supporting families who participated in the YMCAโs Families in Transition program. She truly enjoyed positively impacting and transforming the lives of families. Gloria was recognized for her strong work ethic and accomplishments when she was honored with the YMCA Black Achievers award. Gloria leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted children Dayna Ervin (wife Angela Crawford-Ervin), Daylana Ervin-Parker (husband James Parker); her sister Barbara Baron; her brothers James Taylor and Keith Taylor; four grandchildren โ Assyria, Alex, Andrew, and Jaylen; five great grandchildren โ Madison, Mya, Skylar, Melody, and Kali; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, and other extended family and dear friends. Gloria is preceded in death by her sister Kimberley Ervin.
