Obituary for George S. Hennessy

George S. Hennessy, of Dennis, formerly of Milton, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025. He was 89 years old and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

George is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Dottie; his children, Stephen Hennessy (Tricia) of Milton, Susan Hennessy (Bridget) of Walpole, and Beth Hennessy Magann (Larry) of Canton; as well as by his grandchildren Matthew, Caroline, and William Magann and Michael Hennessy. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Helen (Conway) Hennessy, and his siblings Bettina Pineault and Helen Vendler. He is remembered by all as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and role model.

George grew up in in the Forest Hills section of Boston. He graduated from Boston College High School in 1953, where he was the captain of the basketball team, and was a 1957 graduate of Boston College. He was proud of being a Double Eagle and carried a deep loyalty to both schools throughout his life. After graduating from BC, George entered Officer Candidate School and served four years as an Officer in the United States Navy in Charleston, SC.

George and Dottie were happily married for more than 66 years. They were best friends and shared a loving partnership raising their family in Milton, with summers in West Dennis on Cape Cod. George loved the beach and was known to be the first dad to arrive in the West Dennis neighborhood on summer Friday afternoons.

After earning his MBA at Babson College in 1964, George went on to have a successful career in sales. He moved into the high-tech industry while it was still newly developing, working for several start-up companies, and retired as the Vice President of Sales at Xyplex Corporation. He also found great fulfillment teaching Marketing as an adjunct professor at Northeastern University. After he retired, he and Dottie split their time between Dennis and Fort Pierce, Florida, where George was an avid golfer and tennis player.

George was a passionate sports fan and was especially dedicated to Boston College football and basketball, and the Boston Celtics. He made the time to be at his children’s various sports games over the years. When he wasn’t playing or following sports, he could often be found gardening and landscaping. He took great pride in his lawn, and it was always impeccable. George loved animals, especially his cats. He believed firmly in spoiling them and would joke that he wanted to come back in a future life “as a Hennessy cat.”

Above all, George was a people person. He loved his family and his wide circle of close friends who meant the world to him. He had an innate ability to understand people, and a genuine interest and caring for others. He was full of fun, a great storyteller, and nothing made him happier than enjoying life with those he loved – especially his four grandchildren. He was a man of great integrity who left a lasting impact on all he touched. He will be missed.

Visiting hours Saturday March 8, 10:00 –11:30 AM, at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE. A Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 Noon at Saint Mary of the Hills Church, 29 Saint Mary’s Road, Milton. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a charity of your choice.

    Aunt Dottie, Steve, Susan, Beth. I was shocked and saddened when I got the news from Susan of Uncle George's passing. My fondest memory of George was when he would come to our house every summer and would drive my brother and I to the cape to spend a few days with him and you folks on the cape. Uncle George has a great sense of humor and I would always find a way to make him laugh. I will miss his laughter and his ability to make others laugh.
