Obituary for Evelyn Jean Beveridge

Evelyn Jean Beveridge, dedicated mother, devoted wife, and adoring grandmother, passed away peacefully Friday night, January 13, 2023 at the age of 89 with her four birth children at her side recounting childhood memories of joy and humor.

Evie was the daughter of Alice and Joseph C. Higgins and a loving sister to six other siblings, Mary Nash, Alice Slattery, Joe and Jimmy Higgins (all deceased) along with Ellie Rodgers and Jackie Higgins. She was also a loving aunt to 34 nieces and nephews and their children.

Evie lived a long and happy life, in spite of many setbacks. Her first husband died early of cancer in 1972 leaving her with a tough challenge and 4 young children, Kacey, Ned, Chris, and Peter. Never one to feel sorry for herself, Evie picked up and moved forward one day at a time with great faith and a New England determination.

She remarried in 1977 to a loving husband J. Nelson Beveridge with his two daughters, Karen Montagnese and Janice Oliveira. Sadly, Nelson passed just over a year ago.

Evie was adored and admired for her cheerful personality, her attentiveness to those sick and isolated, her devotion to friends and family, and her finesse around the putting green.

She loved to golf and was a proud member of the Hatherly Country Club in Scituate for decades. In fact, Evie was the first woman ever elected to their Board of Directors.

She was also a member of the Ace of Clubs, Boston, and a graduate of Newton College of the Sacred Heart with an English degree and a great love of reading. As a single mother Evie also worked, first at the family business, J. C. Higgins Corp. of Stoughton, and later at Buttonwood Books in Cohasset where she was never short of a recommendation.

Evie never missed a Mass, and yet never forced her believes about anything in life on anyone. She gave everyone room to be who they were. A model in her early years, Evie was truly a beautiful spirit inside and out.

Evie is survived by her six children, their spouses, 12 grandchildren and three great grandkids, who all bestowed to her the endearing title “Grand-E”.

Her wit, humor, kindness, loving spirit, and robust laugh will be sorely missed by everyone she came in contact with. Evie was truly the embodiment of a life well lived.

A Mass will be celebrated at Saint Anthony’s Parish, 10 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA Saturday January 21 at 9:00 am. Interment Milton Cemetery.
