Obituary for Ernest Dodson
OBITUARY
Ernest “Lucky” Dodson Jr., was born on April 22, 1946 in Boston, MA to his late parents Lois Offley, and Ernest Dodson Sr. “Lucky” is a loving and endearing nickname given to him by his mother when he was just a boy, and has carried with him to this day. It’s the name he prefers in most social circles. However, Lucky also received his Christian name “Blessed” from Pastor John Borders III of Morning Star Baptist Church in 2001.
Ernest received his primary education from the Boston Public Schools and then enlisted into the Army at the age of eighteen where he completed his High School education. Here is where he had the opportunity to travel much of the world in the 60’s during the Vietnam War Era. As a very young man, he completed two tours of serving in the US Army as a Postal Clerk and later became a skilled Microwave Radio Technician during the years from 1963 to 1969 .
When he returned to the Boston area from overseas in 1969, he later worked for the New England Telephone Company as a Technician Installer for a few years when he decided to go back to school for higher learning. He attended UMass Boston as an undergrad Psychology major and was also a very active and popular member of the student body. He was nominated and chosen to be recognized in the UMASS “Who’s Who catalog.
During these years, Ernest met and married his first love, Janet Robbins. They were later blessed with their one and only child, Danielle Lauren Dodson in April of 1973. They later divorced but remained friends while co-parenting and putting Danielle’s well- being first.
Ernest loved children and had a natural ability to entertain them and hold their attention thru his storytelling, his deep voice. He showed his daughter lots of fun and educational experiences growing up that they so enjoyed together as father and daughter. So, it was no surprise he became involved with working with children and young people and ultimately reaching his career goal of teaching in the primary grades at BRCS where he was so affectionately known as Mr. Dodson. Prior to BRCS he worked for the School Volunteers of Boston and later became a teacher at the James P Timilty Middle School in Roxbury. With the guidance and mentorship from his very good friend and colleague, Dr. Roger Harris, he expanded his teaching career while working and teaching technology skills to BRCS students. Ernest had a love and deep interest in technology and the future it promises to young students today. He worked at BRCS from 1999 until he proudly retired in 2016. He Also took great pride in the work he did in retirement as an instructor for the National Safety Council. He felt and believed he was helping to save lives of drivers on the roads and took his position very seriously.
In 1999 Ernest and his now lovely wife Mary of 23 years, rekindled their relationship from younger years and as soulmates do, decided to ‘Jump the Broom’ in 2001. Mary having two adult children from a previous marriage and Ernests’ Danielle, we joined together as a blended family of adult children, grandchildren, great-grand children and many extended family members. Ernest enjoyed being around all of his family members and was quite the family man in his senior years.
Lucky loved life, and is loved by many. His life was filled with family, adventure, travel, music of all genres, cooking and eating, working, swimming, sports, (especially Basketball), cribbage with his friend David, Visiting and spending time with his family (The Harris’, ) driving his convertible in the summer with the top down with his side kick and furry friend Sir Miles, luncheons and excursions with “his boys” to reminisce the “ole days” and do what men do when they gather. He enjoyed and appreciated lots of travel over the years, especially to the Caribbean. He laughed a lot, was very witty and could be quite the jokester amongst friends and family. He had a great sense of humor and was very much a gentle-man.
Lucky is survived by his wife Mary Adams-Dodson, his daughter Danielle Dyer and her husband Joseph Dyer, step-daughter Carla Sheppard-Bell, her husband James Bell, step-son Steve Sheppard Jr, his 6 grandchildren ( Brianna Dodson, Kaylee Dyer, Christine Lansdown, Anthony Hooker Jr. Adina Sheppard and Steve Sheppard III and 10 great grand- children amongst them, his sister Christine Vierra and his brother Fredrick Arthur and ‘Bro’Cuz’ John “Boo” Rice and family. Lucky was predeceased by his loving brothers Phillip Dodson, Joseph Arthur and sister Florence (Pudgy) Arthur. Rest in peace.
Ernest is also survived by his Nieces, Candice Crawford, Tiffany Crawford, Melinda Stewart and Nephews Jose Echevarria and Marquise Echevarria. Lucky is also loved by a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews and all of his extended family members. “Lucky” Dodson will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He transitioned peacefully at home with the love of his Creator and his loved ones on June 28, 2024 @ 5PM. He was 78 years old… Lord, May his heart, soul and spirit rest in eternal peace.
