Obituary for Ellen M. Kenny

KENNY – Ellen “Nell” (McDonagh), age 91 of Dorchester formerly of Leiterard Carna, County Galway, Ireland.

Our beloved mother entered into the kingdom of God on Thursday, September 28, 2023, hand in hand with the Sacred heart of Jesus, the blessed mother.

She met St. Peter at the Gold and Pearl gates of Heaven that were opened wide. Greeted by her mother, father, husband, daughter, siblings, in-laws and nephew.

Ellen first came to America from Ireland as a novice with the Dominican order. She was assigned to Seattle, Washington. She loved Seattle, God, Jesus and the blessed mother, but the sisterhood was not her calling, and returned to Ireland. Her devotion and faith were forever strong and never faulted, returning to America and settled in Boston. Ellen met her husband Terry and settled in Dorchester, where they raised their 9 children in a second-floor apartment.

Her house was filled with love and always open for anyone to stop by for a cup of tea. Strangers, friends and family would only have to look around and knew of her great devotion to God, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Mother of Perpetual Help. Known to her grandchildren as “Mamo”, she made the best scones and birthday cakes, they also learned of Mamo’s faith, and where she kept her rosary beads. She raised all her children to be Catholic and taught all to pray, to believe in God and say the Rosary. Best gift anyone could ever receive.

All adorned by beautiful pictures in the kitchen, her bedroom and the spare bedroom. We all must remember our faith will get us through her passing, and prayer will get us through all our earthly problems.

Rest in Peace.

Beloved wife of the late Terence “Terry” Kenny. Devoted mother of Terence Kenny and his wife Robin of Sandwich, Mary Morgan and her husband Sean of Dorchester, Brigid Kenny-White and her husband Brendan of West Roxbury, Catherine Wu and her husband John of West Roxbury, Eithnea Kenny and her wife Patricia of Quincy, Helen Melo and her husband John of West Bridgewater, Sean Kenny and his wife Jayne of Braintree, Peter Kenny and his wife Lindsay of Dorchester, and the late Roisin Kenny. Dear sister of the late Mary McDonagh, Johnny McDonagh, Mathais McDonagh, Brigid Lydon, Nan Oneil, and Catherine McDonagh. Cherished mamo of Roisin, Fiona, Marisa, Lauren, Maeve, Sean Terence, Ellen, Meagan, Terry, Brendan, Lucas, Grace and Morgan.

Deepest sympathy to all the Kenny family on Nell's passing. I have lovely memories of Nell since I was a child when she visited us in Galway and she introduced me to meatloaf and making a mess in the kitchen. Every trip to Dorchester involved Nell offering God knows how much food. Always a great welcome for me and anyone who came with me. The annual trips to Knock to get Nell her Knock calendar. So many lovely memories of a lovely lady. I am sure you are all heartbroken but please God you will find solace to think of all who have gone before Nell and who will be giving her a great welcome in Heaven. Lots of love, Helen xxx

Mrs. Kenny as I called her was a beautiful and saintly woman; when my family first moved to Welles Ave, she and her family were the only ones who welcomed us with open arms and loving hearts and fully accepted us into the neighborhood. My first memory of her involved her young daughter Helen, 4 at that time, playing in our yard the first days when we moved to Mr. & Mrs. Kenny's neighborhood. From that time, my family became great friends, with her, her husband and children, especially my sisters, and Helen ended up marrying one of my first cousins. I think Mrs. Kenny and her family were the first and maybe only family that welcomed us to the neighborhood, Mrs. Kenny was and is a great example of Christian charity. May God bless her, and her family forever. Love, John Nunes

It is with a heavy heart that I send my deepest condolences to the Kenny Family. Nell was a loving and caring woman, who always looked out for others. She took care of me at school and made sure I always had a hot lunch and freshly made Irish Bread. I wish you peace and love on this next journey in life. I know Roisin is smiling now that you are with her and in her warm embrace. Know that you and the Kenny family were blessings in my life at St. Marks. The memories of your kindness have been with me always. Sending much love to you all. With love, Ann Benjamin Hawkes
