McCARTHY – Eleanor R., “Ellie”, age 93 of Milton formerly of Dorchester and Braintree, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness.

Beloved daughter of the late Charles and Anna (McMullen) McCarthy. Devoted sister of Charles McCarthy and his wife Denise (Creamer) McCarthy of Braintree, the late Anne L. McCarthy of Milton and the late Mary Svirsky and her late husband Peter Svirsky of Marshfield. Cherished aunt of Sean McCarthy of Braintree, Christine McCarthy of Dorchester, Michelle Hume and her husband Michael of Braintree, Michael Svirsky and his longtime partner HoSze To of South Boston and the late Peter Svirsky and his surviving wife Darlene Svirsky of Marshfield. Adoring great-aunt of Charlie Hume of Brooklyn NY, and Fiona Hume and Molly Hume of Braintree.

Ellie was born and raised in Dorchester and graduated from St. Ann School in Neponset. She then ventured to Cambridge on the Red Line to be a member of the first graduating class of Matignon High School where she met her lifelong friend Betty Connerty. Ellie went on to work as a manager in customer service at Boston Edison for more than 40 years and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Boston Edison Credit Union for 30 years, serving in this role with great integrity. In 1984 she was the first female in her family to graduate from college, earning an accounting degree.

Ellie would tell you “I had a damn good time” in this life. She owned at least two convertibles, traveled the world with her dear friends Peggy Foley, Peggy Regan and Sherry Bowman, and vacationed in Jamestown RI for decades with her sister Anne, and friends Jeanne Regan and Ethel Conaxis, playing bridge together for hours on end. She delighted in the possibility of hitting it big on a scratch ticket and never missed an opportunity to go to a casino. She loved a party and always enjoyed celebrating with the Casey and Creamer families. She read the Boston Globe from cover to cover every single day and looked forward to discussing anything and everything during coffee hour with her friends at Fuller Village. She was a faithful Patriots fan and a proud democrat, lamenting the state of our government until her final days.

Eleanor cherished her independence and was able to remain in her own home because of the devotion of her companion Carmel O’Flaherty, whose unwavering attentiveness and patience made Eleanor feel safe and secure. Special thanks to Maria for looking after El on the weekends and to Barbara and Jane for keeping an eye on El from across the hall.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 12th at St. Agatha Parish, 432 Adams St., MILTON at 10:30 am. Interment in Milton Cemetery, MILTON. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12 at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., EAST MILTON SQUARE from 9:00 – 10:00 am prior to the mass.
