Obituary for Edward Reuben Lindsay

Edward Reuben Lindsay (affectionately known as Ed or Leslie) was born in Underwood, Montserrat, British West Indies on October 17, 1936 to William and Margaret Lindsay. He died on January 15, 2025.

During his formative years, he attended Cavalla Hill School under the tutelage of Headmaster and cousin Mr. Charles Greenaway where he excelled in “track and field”. While on school break, he enrolled in various training programs such as carpentry, shoe repair and soldering.

In October, 1954 at the tender age of 16, he expressed a strong desire to travel to London, England in search of gainful employment. After arranging with relatives in the UK to accommodate him, his parents permitted him to set sail for Northampton, England where he celebrated his 17th birthday on the open seas. Upon joining the British workforce, he was now a bonafide member of the Windrush Generation. (The Windrush Generation is a group of skilled and unskilled people of Afro-Carribean heritage whose mission was to rebuild a postwar British economy).

While in the UK, he engaged in various forms of employment to the extent that his skills permitted. He was very industrious, dependable and a quick learner who excelled at the various jobs he held. He also enjoyed the social life in London to the maximum extent possible, while engaging in bodybuilding. After residing in London for 5 years, he decided to relocate to the US.

In 1959, Edward migrated to Boston, Massachusetts where he resided with his brother Irod and later other family members. He worked at a chemical company during the day and attended the Franklin Institute at night to fulfill his dream of becoming a plumber. Upon completing his training, he joined Plumbers Union No:12 in 1972 and was employed by E.M. Duggan of Canton for 27 years.

In the late 1960s, he met Elizabeth O’Garro in Boston with whom he established a courtship. This courtship resulted in a marriage ceremony on June 27, 1970, a 54 year relationship, 2 daughters viz: Renee Bellinger and Tamara Lindsay and one granddaughter viz: Lindsay Bellinger.

Edward was protective, nurturing, generous, thoughtful and kind towards his daughters and granddaughter.

After retirement, he continued to enjoy his 60 year relationship with Bethel Tabernacle Pentecostal Church, honing his skills on his electric guitar, delving into photography, bird watching, following the Boston Celtics and traveling with his wife to such exciting and exotic places as England and the British Isles, Europe, the Mediterranean, North, Central and South America including Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean.

Edward is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, daughters Renee (Derrick), and Tammy, granddaughter Lindsay, brothers Irod Lindsay, Herman Lindsay and Leonard Lindsay, sister Mavis Bennett, nieces, Keri Dickinson (Rich), Tanya Walker (Anthony), Melissa Lindsay, Great nephew Buddy Dickinson, Great nieces: Piper Dickinson, Jordan Walker and Brooklyn Walker and his uncle George Lindsay.

I am remembering a trip to New York and I called my cousin to see if I could get a ride with him and Liz he said he would be glad to have the company because his wife was unable to attend. We spent the journey talking about Montserrat and the Allen family and listening to music. On the way back he said he had to make a stop and he went into a bakery bought himself bread to take home to his family and to my surprise, he also bought me bread even though I didn't ask. It is a memory that I treasured spending the time with him on the trip to and from Brooklyn. My condolences to his family May you rest in peace my dear cousin. Lucena (Allen) Daley

To the Lindsay family, my mother and I are sending our love and prayers to you all. I miss Papa Lindsay so much. He lived such a great life & loved his family so much. I always enjoyed our conversations wherever I stopped by to visit Tammy or called to check in. He will surely be missed.
