Obituary for Edward J. McCarthy
Edward J βEddieβ McCarthy, age 86, originally from Dorchester and a longtime resident of the North End passed away peacefully, Monday, April 29, 2024.
Eddie was born in Boston, to the late Joseph and Lillian McCarthy. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph and sisters Anne Dooley and Kay Slattery. He was a graduate of Boston College class of 1960. He spent most of his career working in and retired from the Auditorβs Office for the State of Massachusetts. He enjoyed meeting many of his friends after work at the Golden Dome to discuss Boston politics and sports.
Eddie loved music, and if there were a piano available, he would regale with Irish or Americana tunes and occasionally mix in an original score. It didnβt matter if it was at the piano bar in the Parker House or in the only Irish bar in Huntsville AL, his Irish tenor would add to the atmosphere and good times for all. In his later years he got great pleasure in playing the piano at the Wed night Supper Club at the Paulist Center to feed the homeless. He would be happy if he could bring a little comfort to the homeless as they enjoyed their meal. After the meal he would enjoy meeting many of the volunteers at the Hub Pub.
He had an encyclopedic knowledge of sports with his first passion being baseball. He was part of a group that would play every Sat and Sun afternoon at Dorchester Park. They took their games very seriously and always made time to instruct younger players, some of whom went on to college careers. He enjoyed taking his nephews to the bleachers at Fenway Park as well as a Park League game on a warm summer evening. He could tell you who was the star of any Beanpot hockey game and would never miss a BU-Cornell hockey game at the old Boston Arena. From Ted Williams to Cousey, Russell, Orr, Yaz, Bird, Pedro and Brady he would follow the ups and downs of the hometown teams.
He would enjoy his daily coffee at the Fill-A-Buster, and his last couple of years felt fortunate that he had friends that could occasionally bring him to recapture good memories. He also especially enjoyed his breakfasts at the North End Grill and the friendly staff he could converse with.
A devout Catholic, he attended St. Gregoryβs school and was a parishioner there until he moved into Boston and the North End. He became a parishioner at St. Leonardβs Church; and after his retirement he would walk to daily mass to receive the Eucharist.
