Obituary for Edgar L.P. Matthews IV
Edgar “Eddie” L.P. Matthews IV 39 of Mattapan, died on Saturday, August 14, 2021.
Eddie was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to parents, Edgar and Imani. He lived the majority of his life in Mattapan, MA.
He attended the Bates, King, Berea and Cathedral schools in Boston; Clark University in Atlanta and UTI in Framingham, MA. Eddie had an active sense of humor that could get him into trouble, especially at school. Math came easy to him and he was often the go-to person, especially at home, to help figure out math problems for his siblings, niece and nephew, as they were growing up. From the time he began to walk, Eddie loved cars. He loved taking his toys apart and putting them back together. Every Christmas, birthday and trip to a store, meant that a new model of Match Box and Speed Wheels cars would be added to his collection. He loved riding his Hotwheels and his bike, up and down the halls in the house, then the sidewalks and then the trails and slopes in Almont Park. Eddie also loved collecting toy sports figures, plastic ‘army men’ and t-shirts with his favorite cartoon characters. He loved music and sports and as he grew, his bedroom walls would be covered with popular sports figures and his music idols. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. As a teenager, he had many dreams. He attended the Black College Tour and was a member of the National Black College Alliance. He had a natural draw towards children and young people and was proud of being a mentor. As a young boy and teen, he was a member of the Boys and Girls Club in Roxbury.
Growing up, he was a member of Union Baptist Church in Cambridge and in recent years, would attend True Vine Church in Dorchester MA. He had a deep sense of fairness and of being non-judgemental. He had an ideology of what faith in action should look like. Eddie loved family. He loved to socialize and having his family and friends gathered together for cookouts, birthday parties and holidays. When they were alive, he loved spending time with his paternal grandparents, Edgar and Helen aka ‘Gran and Gramps’ and with his maternal grandparents, Marion and Preston aka ‘Nan and Dad’.
He loved Boston. He loved his community of Mattapan. Eddie’s childhood friends became his life-long friends. They were also his family. As he grew and made friends through school, community programs, places of employment, repairing cars and his ‘famous’ sporadic cook-outs (after hi-jacking his mom’s grills), Eddie’s network expanded across Boston and into many states. He was also an avid collector of watches.
He was proud of his Cape Verdean heritage. He was proud of his African American heritage. He always had a confidence that whatever the situation, it would all work out. His famous words would be ”I got you.”
He adored his nieces and nephews. When he became a father, his children became his world and he wanted to give them a life he’d dreamt of. In the months before his death, he had incorporated his T-shirt company and was so proud that his work was becoming popular. He scheduled to take his test and resume his previous work as a pharmacy technician. He had also begun a health regimen that included a plan to quit smoking and he had completed the first month’s kit. He was working his plan for his next chapter of life. The tragedy of Eddie’s death will not overshadow the joy of his life. He will be forever loved and cherished.
In addition to his many family, friends and his parents, Eddie leaves in this life: Aunts: Elaine and Eleanor, Siblings: Nikki, Rashaun, Sasha and Tyra, Nieces: Iyauna, Leilani, Majesty and Amira, Nephews: Daniel, Khaleo and Julian, Great Niece: Z’Nyah, Great Nephew: Zaviiar; Children’s Mother: Shauna and most especially, his two beautiful Children: Eddie and Sanye. Rest in Peace and Power, our Beloved Eddie aka; ‘Eddie spaghetti’ aka ‘Eddie bo-ray’ aka ‘E-Slim’ #Igotyou The family sincerely thanks the outpouring of love and support to all. May there be Peace. May there be Justice. May there be Unity.
