Obituary for Dorothy E. Morris

Dorothy Eleanor Morris, age 86, formerly of Quincy and South Boston passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 23, 2024. She was the daughter of George P. Morris, Jr. and Anna Golden Morris of South Boston.

Dorothy is survived by her five siblings, Anne Lynch of Hingham, (Edward, deceased), Pauline Stathis of Lincoln (Gus), Dr. Robert E. Morris of South Boston, (Jill Dopson), Joanne McDevitt of So. Boston (James, deceased) and E. Jennifer Morris of Boston (Steven Oldsman).

Her brothers, George and Geoffrey, predeceased her.

She loved her family first and foremost and raved about all her nieces and nephews whom she bonded with over the years and shared in their successes, whether in academia or sports. She was always willing to help them hone their skills when requests came.

Her nephews and nieces were devoted to her. Edward F. Lynch of Ridgefield, Conn. (Carolyn), Anne Lynch Kenneally (Kevin) of Hingham, Michael P. Lynch (Sandra) of Hingham, Katie Carroll (Kevin) of Milton, Jennifer Morris of Rockland, Christina Stathis of Burlington, Anna Morris of Washington, D.C, James P. McDevitt of Somerville, Patricia "Trish" Morris-Atwood of Washington, D.C. (Josh), Marco Oldsman of Baltimore, Maryland. Geoffrey W. Morris and Charles Morris predeceased her.

Dorothy’s affection extended to her 14 great nieces and nephews who took great joy in their visits with her; with her guidance and inspiration they have come to love the arts as she did.

She maintained her relationships with old and dear friends throughout her whole life including Janice Fox Ice, a lifelong and treasured friend now living in Connecticut.

Dorothy is a graduate of Nazareth High School in South Boston, class of 1955 and Simmons College in 1959, where she majored in journalism. Over the years, she always managed to share her views on travel and politics with the Patriot Ledger which published a great many of her tales of travel. Prior to her retirement, she was an assistant vice president at Standish Ayer & Wood, as Director of Corporate Information

Her love of sports, whether tennis or skiing, filled her younger days. Travel to Europe consumed a great deal of her time, before and after retirement. Her mind never rested.

Upon retirement, she went back to her love of writing and eventually poetry. She shared her knowledge and expertise with the writer's group in South Boston and helped many to publish their work. She also managed to find time for pursuing art classes with Dan McCole. She produced some lovely art. She was an officer of the South Boston Arts Association and a member of the Special Libraries Association.

Dorothy will be sadly missed by her friends and family. Her personal life was full and her spiritual life was forever strong. Her Irish wit and strength during adversity were recognized by all who knew her. Books and literature were her passion.

The family is eternally grateful for the sustained, compassionate care provided to Dorothy by Nadia Vargas and her darling daughters, Shanelle and Maryuri, Massachusetts General Hospital, Allerton House and Alliance Health at Marina Bay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Agatha Church, 432 Adams St., Milton, Tuesday, July 2, at 10:30 A.M. Interment will follow at St. Paul Parish Cemetery 114 Hersey St., Hingham. Visitation at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
