Obituary for Dennis J. Hourihan

Dennis J. Hourihan died on November 10, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joanne (McCarthy) Hourihan, his daughter Carrie Stack and his sons Craig D. and Corey A. Hourihan. He leaves behind his beloved granddaughters, Amaya and Delainey Hourihan and his siblings, Joey, Nancy and Kevin. Dennis is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Everybody was Dennis’s buddy and Dennis was everybody’s best friend.

Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Thursday, November 14 from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. with U.S. Army funeral honors presented at 1:00 p.m. Relatives and friends invited.

Dennis was born on May 3, 1951 in Dorchester, MA (OFD) to Virginia (McViney) and Joseph Hourihan. He cherished his youth growing up in Codman Square, Dorchester where he was known to frequent Brigham’s rather than school. He kept in close contact with his childhood friends to this day.

Dennis was a U.S. Army (MP) veteran during the Vietnam War era. After returning home he went to work for the MBTA retiring as a Chief Inspector from the Quincy garage. After his MBTA retirement, Dennis was a Lead Court Officer at the Moakley U.S. Courthouse in Boston and was also employed as a Deputy Sheriff by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department for over 25 years.

Dennis cherished his time with his family and their house at Point Sebago, Maine, where he owned one of the biggest pontoon boats on the lake and one of the largest golf carts. Although he was a city slicker, some of his fondest childhood memories were spent on family vacations to Prince Edward Island. Dennis loved his dogs, great food, a good cigar, his Harley and his Impala SS.

While Dennis was large in stature, he was a gentle giant. He will be sorely missed by all for his good humor and many kindnesses.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dennis’s memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org

Dearest Hourihan family, I am incredibly saddened to hear of this devastating news. Please accept my sincere condolences. Dennis was so proud of his family especially his beautiful grand babies. I met CSO Dennis from his daily night shift detail at the Federal Courthouse. Even after a long day at the Court, I never left without stopping by to chat with Dennis, who always had a great story to tell me and a kind word. He was the most genuine of gentleman and possessed a likability like no other. May he rest in eternal peace and may we keep his memory of kindness in our hearts forever. Elizabeth Sonnenberg

My deepest sympathies to the family of my dear friend of over 2 decades. Dennis was the first friend I made working at the Federal Court. We became fast friends and then neighbors. He was the best of the best!! I cherish the memories of our zillions of conversations, good times and his sage advice. He finally has the peace he deserved. Those left behind will never forget his big heart. I hope he's enjoying one of his favorite cigars and a big "ruby relaxer" while he swipes through vacation and family photos at a car show in heaven. Heaven's gain is our tremendous loss. I'm so glad that I was fortunate to know Dennis! I will miss you so much, D.

Nancy, Joey and Kevin, I have memories going back to my childhood of visiting my Grandpa & Grandma on Allston Street and Dorchester and My Dad taking me to visit your grandparents the McVineys and your Mom Ginnie. The house was always full of love and welcome, same on Squantum Street. When I worked in Boston I met Denny many days at the north Quincy station doing his thing, always the big smile and Happy hello, he was a giant of a man but as many said before me a gentle one! The nicest man and so much like both your parents. Joe and his pipe, cocktail in hand at many soirées at my parents house, always a hug and happy to see us, your Mom the most fun person whose company I have ever been in and a kind and loving woman. They would be so proud of you all, I only have such warm memories of being with all of you. We are so very sorry for your loss Love Jinny & Jack Nealon Plymouth MA

RIP, Dennis, we had alot of good times over the years golfing, having a couple of cocktails afterwards. Telling each other how well we hit the ball and that we had to carry the team. RIP God bless

To my Uncle D, I keep finding myself looking back at the text messages we shared. Most of our conversations revolved around food, politics, your wonderful grandkids, and those hilarious jokes of yours that definitely shouldn't be made public. But the message that stands out the most is when you told me, "Enjoy it all while you can before you end up like me and Uncle Joe. Live every day like it could be your last. Stay smart and invest as much as you can in your 401s. Before you know it, you'll be ready to retire. HAVE FUN." You certainly knew how to live life to the fullest. I learned what fun really meant from you: getting thrown off the tube every year at Sebago Lake, battling it out over Boggle games, and knowing there would always be dessert waiting, thanks to you. I love you dearly, and I'm so grateful you're at peace now. I hope wherever you are, there are endless supplies of all your favorite things—cigars, desserts, and plenty of laughter. Love always- your favorite niece, Olivia

Dennis was a friend with true loyalty who always managed to touch base at least a few times each year. A big man with a bigger heart. He was one of the few people who could honestly refer to me as 'Little Buddy'. RIP 'Skipper', your 'Little Buddy' misses you.

I will never forget the day Dennis took me and my boys out on the pontoon boat, and let my younger one drive the boat fast. It will be imprinted in my mind forever. What a lucky family and friends to have memories with such a special person. His voice, his personality, his laugh, his love for all of you... what a gift. Carrie, thank you for letting your roommates get to know and love Dennis!

I consider myself extremely lucky to have grown up with an uncle like Uncle Dennis. He was more than just an uncle to Olivia and I. Every summer we would eagerly await our weekends away with him in Sebago where he would take us and our friends tubing, start campfires, and let us drive his precious golf carts. I even had the pleasure of living with him for a period of time where he would always wait up for me to make sure I was home safe and keep my favorite foods stocked in the kitchen. Olivia and I have the best (and funniest) memories looking up to Uncle Dennis and Dad's close relationship and learning the importance of family. Uncle Dennis was bigger than life and we will remember him by all the years he kept our family laughing. We will miss him dearly.

Cousin Dennis. Oh, the memories I have. My beloved cousin. I'll never forget you in your office in the U.S. Courthouse and your "lunches". Especially the time you yelled to me in the Rotunda of the Courthouse. "So what's the problem with your arse that my mother was talking about?" Thankfully no judges were around. Some of them remembered you fondly by the way. Oh the good memories. You have been a good man. I was sorry to see you go the way you did. I wish there was a way to spare you all of the agony. May you now find peace and love. God bless you. Cousin Tom
