Obituary for David Reid

David Reid of Dorchester, MA, died on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. He was 64 years old. “Uncle D,” as he was lovingly known to all, was born on February 17, 1957, to the late Lebert and Muriel Reid in Kingston, Jamaica. The eighth of ten children, David graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School where he played on the Elite Bullboys soccer team.

Following graduation, he enrolled in Boston State College with plans to major in World History and Education. In his junior year, he transferred to the University of Massachusetts Boston where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and History.

Though he was passionate about education, David accepted a job as an environmental technician at Partners Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a position he held for over 40 years until his untimely death. His position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital allowed him to be available to his then aging parents. He was dedicated to his family. He doted on his nieces and nephews and was always available to help anyone, no matter the request. David demonstrated his love through his kindness and quiet humility.

David was deeply commited to the Rastafarian religion and the teachings of Marcus Garvey. He thought deeply about current events and found ways to analyze, interpret, and explain how Biblical history relates to world events. He always found a parable to describe everyday situations. A favorite was, “A patient man rides a donkey.”

David enjoyed spirited debates, especially at family gatherings, where he would use the opportunity to teach, share and engage. An avid soccer fan, he enjoyed watching World Cup Soccer matches and was a devoted fan of the Reggae Boyz, the Jamaican soccer team. Over the years, he honed his skills building and rebuilding computers, and repairing cars.

David was predeceased by his siblings, Lurline Daley, Roland McBean and Cecil Barrington Reid. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving siblings Hubert Reid (Yvonne), Pauline Alexander, Derrick Reid, Franklyn Reid (Lynda), Sharon Reid-Worrell (Cecil) and Jodie Williams (Derrick), his cousin Avia Reid, a host of loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, relatives and friends in England, Canada, Jamaica, and the United States. “Uncle D’s” legacy of kindness and humility will live on forever through them all.

Family and friends are invited to visit on September 24th 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, Dorchester Lower Mills. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, September 25th at 10:30 a.m. in the Dolan Funeral Home. Interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Boston. Masks required.
