Many of us struggled through our first year of university, carefully hiding our own insecurities as we were thrown into a larger world where everyone else seemed to be so much more learned, sophisticated, and sure of themselves. Fortunately, I was blessed to be able to count Dana and the rest of the people in the basement of Houston Hall as my supports during that time. Things that I learned from Dana? When it came to work, quality was essential. "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right!" Dana would cite his father. But, playtime was equally important. When schoolwork got to be overwhelming, Dana would abruptly proclaim any day as Saturday. "But Dana, I need to go to lecture. It's Wednesday and class begins in 15 min." To which, Dana would give an emphatic, "No! It is really Saturday, and you are free to do whatever you want or need to do." Other lasting life lessons? The only way to fish for trout in the Northwoods in April, is with a lit Parodi clenched between the teeth to keep the blackflies away. (Right, Paul?) Also, after knowing that he had to have every orifice of his body swabbed after he capsized his dinghy during a sail regatta on the Charles, I learned the true dangers of water pollution in the Boston area in the 1970s. And so many more life lessons.... Thank you, Flash.
