Obituary for Claire Frances (Ward) Murray
Claire Frances (Ward) Murray passed away peacefully on March 9, 2023, at 106 years old. She was the daughter of Bartholomew and Mary (McTigue) Ward, who emigrated from Ireland in 1901 and raised ten children in both Waterbury, CT and Dorchester, MA. Claire, the sixth of ten, was born on December 7, 1916, in Dorchester MA and graduated from Dorchester High School in 1935. She was a long-time resident of Quincy MA and regularly walked to the grocery store up until the age of 103. She was pre-deceased by her husband, William S. Murray and her nine sisters and brothers – Mary (Ward) Dolan, Kay (Ward) Cosgrove, Emily (Ward) Downing, Alice (Ward) Murphy, Theresa (Ward) Keif, John Gordon Ward, Eileen (Ward) Gallagher, Gerald Ward, and Phil Ward. She and her husband Bill did not have their own children, but she dearly loved her 42 nieces and nephews and their children, all of whom she loved to brag about. She wanted to go to college, but her parents needed her to work. She worked with computers for over 40 years and continued working into her eighties, when she left her work to care for a niece in need. During her career, Claire worked for the OSS assisting with the war effort during World War 2. In her later years, she looked back in marvel at how lucky she was to have grown up with nine brothers and sisters and to be part of the happy chaos that regularly was a part of her life. She was proudest of her work to help others – in particular, family members in need. Her lifelong spirituality was the center piece of her life and gave her tremendous strength. Her spirituality and positive outlook made her a joy to be around, and she will be missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Mary’s Church, 115 Crescent Street, Quincy, Saturday March 18 at 10:00 AM. Family and friends invited. Burial Cedar Grove Cemetery.
