Obituary for Carolann Marie Speranzo
Carolann (Carol) M. Speranzo, 70, of Quincy, MA, died after a brief illness surrounded by family at South Shore Hospital on August 25th, 2024. Carol was born in Brookline, MA in 1954 to Fred and Madeleine Speranzo. She grew up in Dorchester, MA, and attended St. Gregory’s Grammar and High School. Carol graduated from Emmanuel College in 1975 with Political Science and Modern Languages majors. She worked through college as a bookkeeper and opticians’ aide. This motivated her to study for her optician’s license. Carol opened Second Sight in Quincy in 1979 and was in business for 45 years. She also worked as an emergency medical technician (EMT) for the Boston Ambulance Squad. As a member, Carol was the first woman inducted into the Lions Club in Quincy and became the first female president from 1994-95, of which she was still an active member. Carol was always giving back to the community. She taught yoga and classes at Aquinas College and Carney Hospital and dispensed eyeglasses to local nursing homes. Carol continued to pursue her degrees, obtaining a Master of Science in Applied Management from Lesley College in 1988 and a Doctorate in Health Sciences from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) in 2018. She also served on the faculty at Quincy College from 2004-2015 and MCPHS University from 2015-2024. Carol won many awards and distinctions in her incredible career. As a dedicated member of her family, her friends, and the healthcare community, Carol always put others before herself. But for her, it was a way of life.
Carol is survived by her twin daughters, Sara (Quillin) Monaghan and her husband Evan Monaghan of Quincy and Alessandra Quillin of Malden; her brothers, Charles (Charlie) and Neal Speranzo of Arizona and their spouses and children; and grandchildren, Kian and Noelle Monaghan.
