Obituary for Brigid (McErlaine) Kearney
Brigid (McErlaine) Kearney of Plymouth, formerly of Milton, died peacefully on January 16, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late John E. Kearney, who passed away in 1985. Brigid was born on April 16, 1927, to Sarah (Clarke) and Donald McErlaine, the youngest of 10 children, and grew up on the family farm in Armoy, County Antrim, N. Ireland. She studied to become a nurse and worked at the Mater Hospital in Belfast, before leaving her home country to work as a registered nurse in Flushing, Queens, NY. After moving to the Boston area and working at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, she married and settled with her husband in Milton, MA, raising three children and helping to put them through college. She continued her nursing work at Riverside Nursing Home in Mattapan, and later with the Milton Visiting Nurses.
Brigid was a devout Catholic of great faith, a longtime parishioner at St. Mary of the Hills in Milton, and in later years at St. Joseph Parish in Kingston, MA. She was a great (yet sometimes critical) fan of the Boston Red Sox, and she loved to listen to music. In the late 1970s and 80s her kitchen was constantly filled with the sounds of WROL 950 AM the “Irish Hit Parade” on Saturday afternoons. But throughout her long life her constant and unwavering focus was always her devotion to her family. In her later years she loved spending time with her beloved grandchildren.
Brigid is survived by her three children, Anne Carney and her husband Brian Carney of Kingston, MA, Kathleen Kearney of Dedham, and John Kearney and his wife Kathryn of Needham. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Kerry Carney, Marie Carney and Michael Carney all of Kingston, and Evelyn Kearney and Aaron Kearney both of Needham; and by many nieces and nephews in Ireland, N. Ireland, and beyond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 24, 2022 in St. Mary of the Hills Church, Milton, at 10 o’clock. Visiting Hours Sunday, January 23, 2022 in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue., EAST MILTON SQUARE, 2-5 pm. Interment Milton Cemetery. If desired contributions in Brigid’s memory may be sent to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at https://ssvpusa.org/donate/
