Obituary for Barry Mendes

Barry Laurindo Mendes was born to Laurindo and Rose Mendes on July 26, 1953, in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

He was the youngest of three children: brother Laurindo “Pancho” Mendes and sister Paula Kingsbury.

Barry served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He went on to receive a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. For thirty years he worked at MIT as an Industrial Hygienist in the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. During that time, he investigated environmental exposures to hazardous materials, in particular asbestos. He was recognized for his extraordinary ability to detect these hazardous exposures.

Barry started riding a motorcycle around the age of 25 and continued to enjoy riding throughout his life. Barry also, had a fascination with his 1974 Triumph which he meticulously kept in driving condition. He purchased the Triumph in 1978. He enjoyed taking rides in the spring and summer with the top down. Barry always loved flying. As a little boy he dreamed of flying. In his early 50’s he obtained his pilot’s license and purchased a plane. He loved taking relatives and friends flying.

Barry was a diehard Red Sox and Patriots fan. He was a season ticket holder for the New England Patriots for over 20 years. He was an avid reader, and Stephen King was his favorite author. He had a great sense of humor. Barry looked for adventure throughout his life.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents: Laurindo and Rose Mendes, sister, Paula Kingsbury, brother, Laurindo “Pancho” Mendes, and his father-in-law Leopold Anderson. Barry is survived by his wife, Barbara Mendes, son, Ahmaad, daughter, Kwanteyzia and two dogs Bella and Cora. Mother-In-Law Annie Anderson, brother-in-law David Lawrence and wife Rose Marie Pelletier, sister-in-law Sandra Murrell and husband Robert Murrell, sister-in-law Rosemary Anderson, sister-in-law June Anderson-Chiles and husband, Michael Chiles. Barry leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Marc and wife Trish Faria, Tammie Jackson, Angie and husband Eddie Talgo, Amanda and husband Frank Dershem, as well as great nieces, great nephews, Godchildren and family and friends.

Funeral Service, Friday, April 25, 2025 in the Dolan Funeral Home, 140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS, at 11 o'clock. Visiting Hour 10 - 11 am. Entombment Forest Hills Cemetery.

    I had the pleasure of working with Barry at MIT for his 30 years there. He was always a joy to work with. He was well respected and loved by his colleagues and friends. His dedication to his work and his family were clear. My condolences to his family and friends.
