Obituary for Alfred F. Ferullo, Sr.

Alfred F. Ferullo, Sr., formerly of Milton passed away on Thursday, July 11, at age 100. He was the son of Carmen and Matilda (Reppucci) Ferullo.

He attended elementary and middle school in Boston’s North End. He graduated from Boston English High School. He spent two years at Boston College and enlisted in the Navy after the Pearl Harbor attack. He participated in the US Navy V-12 program at Brown University before attending officer candidate school at Columbia University. He always remembered that program and the tests each day as the most challenging of all his academic work.

After doing gunnery training at Fort Pierce, FL, he met his crew and headed to Portland Oregon where they boarded the newly built ship, and they set out for the Pacific War theater. He saw combat action which included participating in the Battle of Okinawa. He later participated in the occupation of Japan, and he guided his ship back to New Orleans through the Panama Canal at the end of the war.

He completed his studies at Brown University, BA in Biology, 1947, class of 1945.

Al married Dorothy Cullen in 1948. They moved to Milton in 1952 and raised their family of four children. He worked as a chemist analyzing water for Metcalf and Eddy Engineers for twenty years. He became the head of the Division of Water Pollution Control in the State Department of Natural Resources in 1966. He continued to work for the state of Massachusetts and for the MDC until his retirement in 1988. He was known as Mr. Charles River as he directed the cleanup of the river where he swam in his youth.

Al looked forward to retirement so that he could pursue his many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed boating and fishing in Boston Harbor and earlier at Ponkapoag Pond with his two sons. He bought a computer and taught himself to maneuver the DOS system- before the days of Windows. He was an animal rights activist and a vegan, and he was very sensitive to issues of poverty, civil rights and women’s rights. A strong Democrat, Al loved discussing politics with friends and family. He loved music. Al learned to play the guitar as an adult, and his grandchildren could always hear him practicing in the distance. He preferred jazz. He had a variety of pets. Too many to elaborate on!!!! He loved gardening.

He is predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Dorothy Cullen Ferullo, his sister Susan Zwirble, and his brother Americo L. Ferullo.

He is survived by his four children: Joyce Ferullo Lewis and her husband Robert of Canton, Alfred Ferullo, Jr. and his wife Rose Ann of Stroudsburg, PA, Michael Ferullo and his wife Joanne of Mashpee, and Janet Ferullo Doda and her husband Richard of Harwich. He is survived by ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
