Obituary for Albert (Mickey) Soares

Albert (Mickey) Soares, 92, 0f Buzzards Bay, passed away Friday, August 26, after a brief illness.

Mickey is the son of the late Jackwin and Emilia Soares of Portugal, and the beloved husband of the late Helen C. (Duggan) Soares. He is survived by his sister, Celeste Hamilton of Kentucky, sister-in-law, Jean Conlin of Massachusetts, his nieces, Cheryl Schleiff, Patti Miller and Sharon Oppihle, his nephew Douglas Hamilton, all of Kentucky, and his nieces, Laura Poulin, Julie Conlin (Dave Diana), Mary Jane Walker (John Walker), Dina Conlin (Dave Newman), his nephews, Richard Conlin, Tom Arthur (Kim Arthur), David Arthur, James Arthur (Kerry McGuiness), all of Massachusetts, his niece, Lisa Lashaway of California, and his nephew, Bob Conlin Jr. of Maine.

Mickey was born in Plymouth and was a proud Army veteran of the Korean War era. He and Helen (Claire) married in 1974 and settled in a tidy little Cape on Gray’s Beach in Kingston, where they spent all but one year of their married life.

He worked for Kingston Gas & Oil as a delivery driver for over 30 years. Always neat and punctual, Mickey was recognized as a model employee, and would eschew his own family’s Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to make an emergency fuel delivery to another family in need.

When he wasn’t working, Mickey loved to putter around in his skiff in the waters of Kingston and Plymouth. He also loved tooling around on his motorcycle in his younger years and was especially fond of riding his bicycle along the Cape Cod Canal. He and his friend, Red, logged 2o miles daily on the canal’s bike path for over 20 years. Another of Mickey’s favorite pastimes was eating lunch at Mike’s Restaurant in Fairhaven, where he was a daily regular since it opened its doors in 1974.

Mickey loved kids and was proud of his extended family. He will be missed by each, and every one, whose grief over his passing is tempered by knowing he will be joining his beloved wife, Claire, who predeceased him by just four months.
